Thanks guys.

I'm using decent brands. The latest to break was an ocean& earth. Think the cord was 8mm on this one. Probably the easiest of them to break. Previous was ocean and earth..

Another was Dakine.

The leashes arent super long, maybe 10' for a 9'3 board.

I just can't believe how easily they seem to be cutting on the fins. That must be the only problem given its within 1m of the fixing on all of them. But it's concerning me :s

The fins really aren't sharp. But i guess I have no choice but to sand them down :s what a shame- but I will do it and buy a crow Hayley waist leash and see if that fixes the problem!

Im surprised no one has braided the first 3' of leash to protect from the fins.

You could certainly fit a wire loom braid over your leash if you thing that's the problem, or get some kevlar braid and do it right. You can squish the braid down to fir it over the molded fitting.

Are you ditching your board and porpoising under the white water expecting it to stretch double and not snap?

There is an article coming up in the next SUPMagUK on leashes, Dave's SUPhilosophy.... :)

Using a tail handle prevents leash breakage in a big way.

The only time you should be depending on your leash is when you fall. When caught inside, you need to be in control of your board. Letting your board runaway every time a waves hits puts a lot of wear and tear on the leash. Using a tail handle also dramatically decreases the diameter of your kill zone.

Sometimes in truth- yes. Although I don't know what you mean by porpoising??

I hold onto the base of the leash much of the time- but sometimes it's just ripped out of my hand. Or I can be trying to paddle over the white water and then bail or get chucked off and then the leash gets a big stretch.

I have come close to really injuring myself with a tail handle before. Either badly pulling a muscle in my hand when it just gets ripped out- or tweaking my shoulder as it gets yanked.

I'm really not sure what I can do here :s

There are two possible reasons for that. Either the handle was not designed or installed properly, or you were not using it correctly.

There should be very little pull on your arm in most situations. On the rare occasions that there is, your hand should easily let go of the handle.
