So its been years since I've been on here!  So cool to see lots of the same names I know and remember for the SUP DW days!  I've been fully engaged in foiling for about 7 years, and the focus was always downwind.  I wanted to share a video that we did last week on a decent Maliko day.

Kane, Andrea, Craig and I all run NoLimitz masts and they asked us to go do a downwind video.  I have probably only done 3 runs since August (M2O) so I was a bit out of practice and on a new board....but it all came together ok.  Kane was absolutly killing it, tearing the place apart.  He was on a foil that he designed, so I have no idea what it is, but it was a surf foil.  I think Andrea, Craig and I were all on the Lift 120 with Kane tails.

I would have used a 110 for a day like this, but with all the stopping and starting associated with trying to make a video, I wanted somthing that was easy to lift.  Anyway, hope you guys enjoy this and please reach out if you have any questions.  I'd love to get back on the Zone now and again.

Aloha,  Shep

Thanks David!  Good to hear that from you!  Kane and I were talking about how we could get more quality footage out this next downwind season.  This is a good start.

Very cool video Dude. I wish I could do foil downwinds. I tried--not going to happen. I'm content with wingfoiling though Mark just made me a semi-downwind board. Hope to see you this year. We're back in Maui.

Great video.  Speaking of boards, what are the dimensions on this board?

We are building boards in Half Moon Bay.  We are realizing the benefits of LONGER boards when it comes to catching faster Ocean swells.  Next builds are going to be some 9' 6" x 17" and a x 23".  We will keep them light.

Pono, you should try the foil drive. I have a friend who just started and he used the Foil drive for a few weeks and now he’s doing it on his own. Even if you never go off the foil drive it’s a pretty good experience especially the new one I think is a lot lighter and the connection underneath the looks better.

Craig‘s board is 9’6” x 16“.

Beasho, I have been working on surfing some of our outer reefs with these same boards. Long mast to Foil and a 9 foot or 9 foot 6 x 16 is a gun that gets you in early and a gun hold steady on bigger waves. Hopefully, I can come out with some footage soon!

Yeah, I should. I have two of them 90% built at my shop in Hood River. I should at least finish one of them. ADHD rules the shop--they should have been finished at least a year ago.

We've been getting a ton of super glassy days on Maui this winter.  Here is a short youtube vid to a couple waves from the other morning.  Im using a Lift 100 surf and the NoLimitz 93cm v2.  This is a really good combo for head high waves.  Bigger than that I like the 60surf.

Kai Open Ocean foiling:

Is this just Back to the Future.

I just built a 10’ x 23” board and IT CATCHES EVERYTHING: Big waves, tiny waves, wind chop, no-wind chop @ 10’ x 23” x 5” @ 153 liters 14 lbs 1.8 oz (6.4 kg) with pads and strap.

I made this board for the ocean in and around Pillar Point, Mavericks, California.  Because of the reef, and currents the chop and surface is terrible even when there is no wind.  I wanted something that I could stand on 95% of the time and be fast enough to catch big long period waves.  Then I took it out in one of our smaller “No-Winder” conditions and it worked great.  Catching open ocean 18” – 3 foot swill with NO wind chop.

Beasho, that is awesome.  I would love to get up there and sup surf that with you, but my 17" wide Barracuda might be tough to SUP...might have to prone it.  Standing on it Downwind is different than standing in chop and paddling for a wave.
