Best Tie Down Straps?
« on: September 07, 2017, 02:52:36 PM »
I'm looking for some straps about 12'-13' long with a cam-lock. I don't need locking ones like Kanulock, just basic straps. I do want something that has a protected case around or under the cam like several brands offer. Can anyone here recommend their favorite(s) please?

FCS has a unique version with no moving parts. Anyone have experience with this version vs. a traditional cam-lock?

The cheapest ones I could find that have the size and features I require are by Seattle Sports, but I'm not sure about their quality. You know, that "you get what you pay for" thing.

Thanks!

I don’t transport my board a lot, but when I do I use the NRS 1.5” wide straps (https://www.nrs.com/product/1445/nrs-15-hd-tie-down-straps) They are good, wide, heavy duty straps. Only thing they don’t have is the protection under the cam. It’s not an issue for me as I always use a board bag, but maybe that’s a deal breaker for you? But other than this, they are a very good strap.

Check out Mile 22 straps, 2 inches wide, super strong nylon buckle with no moving parts, various lengths and Mike will costume make any length you want.

DaKine makes a full two inch wide strap.  Just be careful with the enourmous buckles though, heavy enough to dent a car top.

Here's an old thread about my broken FCS straps. https://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,30131.0.html

Just an update. I've now been using my NRS straps for 1 year. They are starting to get stiff, and the little cams are corroding. They started to freeze up, and wouldn't hold the strap tight. I sprayed the cam spring and through pin with some silicon spray. They are working good now, but to me that stiffness is a tell tail sign of impending failure.

My old FCS straps went a good 7 years strong with tons of use and abuse. I think I'm going back to using the FCS loop end system.

Have 2 pairs of FCS D-Locks.  Very easy to strap down and quite secure.  Also add a wire locking Yakima strap for longer high speed travel as extra insurance.  Works a charm.

also use lots of straps in the past and as DJ said that type of strap is the best but if you don't carry more than 2 boards then look at lockrack with easy loading in and out https://www.lockrack.com.au/

At what point do you stop maintaining straps in favor of spending $30 on new ones, when one fails with your board up top?  It has always amazed me, people taking pride about how long they have had their straps ....

If you saw most of my boards or paddles or booties, you'd know how much PRIDE I take in my equipment. They are beaters. I think a strap should last 3 to 4 years reasonably. If it doesn't, it's not a good value. My FCS D-Locks were a good value. In hind sight I probably should have replaced them after 4 years, even though they looked in good condition. The verdict is still out on my NRS straps, but they are looking a little worn out and have corroded cams after just 1 year?

I've got a pair of "taco" straps I bought from Wardog's shop 6? years ago which I really like for basic straps. Still have enough life left in them that I'm not thinking of replacing them just yet.

Rope. Half inch or better. If I need to lock my boards I toss an old steelcore on them, but it's a pain in the ass.
