Surf Sup Shape Input
« on: July 23, 2017, 08:00:45 AM »
Looking for input on my new surf sup.  A little about me.  60 yrs old, 200lb.  Build my own boards.  intermediate / advanced sup surfer.  Current board is 8'4" x  31" x 135L  Surf in SD north county mostly.  Looking for a little more float and stability in my new board.  A better wave catching board without sacrificing too much maneuverability

The board shown has a flat bottom from the nose through the middle of board going into a double concave through the tail.  Any input on this design I can get I would greatly appreciate from you experts out there.  Particularly on my rocker numbers.

On that length I think I'd increase the tail rocker at least 1/4" and prob 1/2". Would be my personal preference. If you're looking for cruisy, glidy, or planning a lot of V I'd say keep what you have.  Nice shape! Post build pics.

Thanks, for the input.  I will increase the tail rocker another 1/4".   I'll post pics as I go along with the build.  Any suggestions on the fin setup?  I am going back and forth with quad or 2+1.

I think it looks great!  Things like rocker, outline, dimensions, and bottom contours are very personal so I could tell you what I would change but then it would not be a board for you :-)

For fin set up I'd go with 4+1 for the most versatility.

Can you post an image or provide details on your vee/concave measurements?

Vee/Concave:
I think you should add a little vee in the center slice (0.05" - 0.10") to help with rail to rail transitions.  31"+ of flat will be very fast but may also cause the board to stick.

COG and Rocker Zero Point:
What are your center of gravity and rocker zero points?

Appreciate all the input.  Anonsurfer,  see the screen shots of the double concave in the tail.  This is the deepest section.  Rocker zero point, if I understand your question, is 53.8" from the the tail or dead center of the board.

Hope you guys don't mind all the questions.  I build these things for the pure joy of going it.  At 60 years old and the cost of each one, I want to minimize the trial and error as much as possible.  So, greatly value your experience.

I like your subtle bottom contours, the board should be fast.

For rocker check a board you really like and adjust from there depending on what you want out of this board.

Vee/Concave:  I would add a very small amount of vee in the center and increase the vee as you move towards the tail.   The vee will help the board go rail to rail a lot easier than a perfectly flat center profile.    See attached rail profile below of my old 6'10" Buzz showing the very subtle vee in the center slice (0.07") and vee at 12" from tail.

Thanks,  I have made the changes and stoked to get started with the build.  I will continue to post pics and questions as I progress.
