I have a ResQlink PLB for peace of mind on longer offshore runs but usually just carry a phone like Bill.
If money was not an issue, I would get one of these:

Nice watch but at 5 ounces without the strap it's a lot to carry on your wrist when paddling.

Nalu, thanks for the link to that Onyx PFD.  I have a belt PFD but mine is five or six years old and far more bulky than that.

I actually think I would wear the Onyx. When you are in OC1, it's important to be able to lay back in the canoe when you're on a drop. That pack is so compact that it doesn't look like it would interfere with that. As far as I know, all the belt backs are actually supposed to be worn so that the PFD is in the front (if you read the instructions). Seems like no one wears them that way but if you did, that makes it even less of an issue for laying back. I'm sold.

$3800?  I think they would rescue the watch and throw you back in the ocean.
