Surfy SUP at Costco

I wonder how this thing would handle heavy surf? They have a promo video of it in 1' ankle slappers. http://www.agit-global.com/content/9ft-6in-v1-sup

I've noticed a grudging respect for the Wavestorm.

Isn't that one of the X-Men? If not, someone's missing a naming opportunity...

Heavy surf? Like they say, some guys could surf a door, and this is a lot better than a door...  and for 299, it can get people out onto the water... that's awesome.

In any event its nice to see them stretching out to a new colorway.

I bought one last summer to ride in very crowded conditions.  I was surprised that it surfs OK.  Catches waves well and turns a little.  Anytime I plan to surf Blackies or other extremely crowded spots, I prefer to surf on the Wavestorm.  It surfs acceptably and I don't worry as much about bumping into tourists who stupidly stand right in front of you, without any clue as to getting out of the way.

I've only used it in surf up to shoulder/head high, so I can't comment on it's ability to handle heavy surf, and I don't think I would try it.  Mainly because the fin is pretty flexy in the finbox without any hard materials around it.  I can't imagine it holding in on a super big and steep face.  However, Jamie OBrian...

My problem with the older 10'6 version was when I would make a hard bottom turn my back foot would slip off. I found myself only turning as hard as I could without my foot slipping. The 9'6 version in the picture has a mid deck pad, but no tail kick pad. That's too bad. They are getting better with their shapes.

Actually, they're really fun to surf, I like them a lot, and they're bulletproof. I surfed one of the early ones in head-high SanO and chest high Doheny and Cardiff. You really have to work at it to break one. The stringers are plywood. The longboard version is a blast, and since you don't care about it, you can do stuff like run it right up on the sand. the SUP uses what looks to be a standard depth and width fin box, so you can replace the fin if you like, but I think the one it comes with suits the board just fine. You won't be doing anything snappy on it, but it's a damned good board for the price.

I always wax the heck out of mine and sit them in the sun. Makes the deck nice and sticky.

If you go somewhere on vacation without a board and find surf, you just go to Costco. When you leave, give it to some kids.

At $300 for the Wavestorm, it would be good for someone who is thinking about getting  a sup since it wouldn't break the bank.

As for the Pelican line of sups, there is a sporting goods chain here in Texas named "Academy" and they carry lots of Pelican kayaks. I'll have to stop in the nearest one to me and see if they have any of their $600 sups to get a look at one.

Can't find the 9'6 on the Costco website, but the little 8 foot jobbie looks like it might keep my monster 3 year old son entertained, just need a cheap paddle, maybe a canoe paddle? And need to get him a wetsuit so I don't scar him for life with our 50 degree water.

It's call a Kids Wavestorm SUP. The 8' Taquito. A few of my friends have them. http://wavestormboards.com/product/694/ I think they only carry them at specific stores. They don't show the boards that are in our store on their website.

They are not at every Costco store yet.

Comes with a paddle and a pretty nice board sock too.

I bought my 12 year old, 60lb daughter one of those last year. This is the 8' surf board, not the Taquito. A small kid could use it for stand up. Great kid board for banging around in the surf. She does short prone downwinders on it in the river too. Good for surfing the shore pound in front of the Event Site in HR as well.
