new fin?
« on: May 09, 2017, 09:13:43 AM »
I have a NSP DC 14 which I use in the bay and open ocean. I am considering upgrading my fin but not too excited about spending $120.00.
The fin I have seems to drag a bit but since I have only owned 2 race boards, I am not sure if it's just my imagination. I'm 210 lbs and intermediate to advanced paddler.
Any idea if I would notice a great difference between the one on the NSP site -RACE 22 (click on link) and the one in the pic?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think you will notice a big difference. I have both of those fins, but have not compared them on the same board. I have the race 20 and I’m surprise how well it tracks for such a small fin. It also has a lot of flex as the thickness gets progressively thinner toward the tip. Sheds weed like they are not even there. I really cannot find anything I dislike about it so far. The Hatchet will probably have more primary stability, but not as maneuverable when trying to change direction. The Hatchet catches weeds.

I agree. That hatchet could be quite respectable in messy downwind stuff, if you like stability, or in surf. But otherwise the race fin should be nicer for everything else and you will notice a difference if you are an intermediate-advanced paddler.

The Race 20 looks good.  The fin you have looks kinda draggy.  Probs the 22 would be ok as well.  If you need stability get the bigger option.  Otherwise go smaller for lower drag and faster turns.  Maybe even get both.  We have 8.3 and 7.0 SIC fins and liked them so much we bought 2 - 8.3s and 3 - 7.0s as spares and so we can leave them on our boards.  Saves time. ;)

Sometimes big fins can knock you off your board. I think that in conditions other that pure flatwater it can grab too much where the fin is in control instead of you.  Fins are a personal preference so you just have to see what works for you in the conditions your going to be paddling in.

Lately I just paddled two boards where you just have to put a small(er) fin to enjoy the full benefit of the boards.
The Ace-GT is at its best with a 37 sqi VMG Mako37 (do not have a Mako28) and the Vapor so far with the SIC 7.0 - the 8.3 feels too big, period.
Awaiting to test soon a 8.0 FCS Flow (30 sqi).

Yes, the 7" SIC weedless fin is a really great good value fin that truly shows you that less can be more when it comes to fins. I agree that the 8.3" seems too big for most purposes, even though it's not a big fin by most standards. The 7.0" carbon is great value, light, good-looking, and very versatile. It's amazing that it costs less than half (or even a third or less, depending where in the world you are) of eg. the VMG or Black Project fins.

This is actually even a better deal as it came with my wife's Bullet 12 :-)

this week/end I will be testing that NSP race 22. The VMG & Blackproject large fins are interesting and I'm working my way down sizes.

I barrowed the 22cm fin and it's skinny compare to my infinity fin master 8" (20.32cm). Is somewhat stable though tippy in some instance if that make sense. The fin feels nice and fast with the tail wind and I think once you get up to speed and like your downwind this is a nice fin.
