Intermediate East Coast Wave Sup
« on: November 26, 2016, 06:38:17 PM »
Hello,

Any thoughts on board choices for East Coast coast surf, intermediate skills ?
Weight at 195 in board shorts.  Currently use a Fanatic Allwave 9'10". I'm looking for something a bit  faster and maneuverable.

Thanks

Welcome to the Zone tpf!
Where do you surf?
It matters for wave and weather conditions.
How old? Everything adds up in this game  :)

at 195 you can go a lot smaller, if you like, but not necessary... whats your goal?

Thank you for the welcome supthecreek.  I follow forecasts asI live just south of Boston.  Closest spot is Nanatasket.  Other spots that I surf at are Long Sands, York Me., Nahant, and First Beach.  Ive not surfed the outer cape as of yet.
Im looking for bit more takeoff speed and a bit more manueverability on the wave. Also, something stable to handle the less than glassy conditions I encounter. And to continue to develop my skills.
As you rightly pointed out in a prior post age is a consideration.  I am 63 and in reasonably good physical shape, albeit with creaky knees.  So width and volume are considerations as well.
Thanks again supthecreek.

TPF-

All great spots- I surfed that area when i lived in Boston in the late 90's/early 2000's Before any of the websites even published forecasts for the inner cape. (also made for some awesome sessions with only a few guys who could read buoy and NOAA data....)

There are a lot of options out there to step down from that Allwave.  5 years ago it was a great all around board- but i think design has passed that shape by with the fat rails and true thruster config.- and while the HRS is bulletproof- it ain't light by today's layup standards.

Your issue- Like many in the Northeast will be about availability to demo.  Not too many shops demo performance Shortboard  style  shapes between Jersey and NH.  (Hopefully some local guys will chime in here)

From memory- most of the time when there is swell on the inner cape the waves are pretty fat.  IE you need some glide to get in and wont be in critical pockets too much.- I'm also assuming you want shortboard style performance.

-A larger Mod-Simmons shape could be fun (L41)
-I have the Infinity RNB which is fun in variable conditions in the right stock or custom size.
-Im sure the Sunova Folks on here will chime in on the Speeed or Flow
-Kings Crossover
-Jimmy Lewis Worldwide

I would say 140-160l would be a nice spot to progress to with your Allwave being 190l and still get you improved performance on the wave at your weight.

TPF - I'm usually always at 1st in Newport when there's surf, shoot me a PM next time your down and you could try my custom 8'10 Kings (125.5L) or my 8'4 Focus Rawson (117.2L).

A step down to the 8'10 Allwave is a great option. I loved the one I bought from SuptheCreek who I know loved it when he had one !!

Check out Northeast Surfing 🏄 for cams of Nantasket, RI. Goomer also has more. Maine, NH, MA North Shore, MA South Shore, MA East Shore, Cape Cod, Newport, Narragansett and more.

I am sure I'll see you somewhere. A big AW with a big dude. If you see a small antique on a King's or Angulo it might be me.

Aloha!

That's awesome tpf..... a neighborhood boy!
LOTs of Zoners around here that will be happy to water swap with you.... meet up with them....try everything you can!

Because I am the official Sunova Mascot, I have a van full of Sunova's that you can demo.

When are you available? I can meet up any time. There's only an hour's drive between us.
If you like....PM me your phone number and we can plan something.

to PM me... just click on "supthecreek" to the left of this post to get to my profile.... then below my picture, click "send PM"

I have a number of boards that are in your range..... but I think you would be super happy with the 9'5 Speeed.
I have a 9'2 Speeed to demo, which would be a challenge... but plenty of float for you.

That aught to give you a start on your research!

Wow supthecreek that's quite a quiver. Wish you were on opposite ends of the country so I can try out some Sanova's.

TPF - Buy used & try every board you possibly can before ever buying a custom. You progress extremely fast, especially if you plan on going 3-4 times a week. Jumped on a 135 L for the first time, fell a lot & only caught one wave. Next time out on it, caught about 10-12 waves.

Same w/ the jump to the 115L. The more you go, the faster you move down. Have fun.

Thanks to all for the info and offers to try your boards.  I appreciate your generosity.

Going from 190 ltr to sub 160 seems to be a big leap for me.  Pretty sure I don't want to kook it up on your boards.   Ill look for shops as to when they have demos.
And I will look for used.  That SUNOVA 9"5" look sweet.

Thanks again and see you on the water!

150 liters is more than enough volume to float you.  A board with a volume more suited to your weight will actually be more stable.

Any of the Sunovas over 9 feet will have all the stability you need. You just have to get on one and see for yourself.

There aren't too many shops that have demo board... especially this time of year.
That's why I have them.... so people can see, touch, paddle, surf....
Not gonna kook up the boards, they are here to demo.

We can meet up for some flat-water testing if you like... so you can see what all the numbers mean.
160 L is way more than enough for you.
My pleasure to share the stoke!

I started my board reduction on a 9'6 Allwave  :)

Hey TPF, if you have the opportunity to try the Speeed definitely do so.
I'm 58 and 205 lb and have the 9'5" Speed. It's my all around favorite board right now.  Although it did take me some time to get used to the Thruster set up. You are limited to the smaller two tab FCS center fins.  Being used to a larger center fin I felt a little unstable on the board at first.  However after I got used to it I found it is stable, easy to to turn around and catch waves with, very fun and very fast.  I highly recommend you try one.
I also have a 10'6" Style XL which is the most stable 160 liter board I have ever been on.

haha Rick

I always get a kick picking out the background of your pictures.  The latest above, Meetinghouse Pond?

RC

ps - after I got my sea legs under me, it turned out to be a decent time, right to dark with Matt and Kenny on plain-old surf boards

Supthecreek, would that 9'5 float me at 250lbs before a wetsuit?
