It's just a scratch..... you've had worse... As my dad would say, "Come on! Just walk it off.."

Look on the bright side, now you can catch up on all the personal and financial business you've been avoiding because of that paddle your holding. ::)
It's not overhead to me!

The best advice you can get in rehab is "do it."

Wishes for a swift recovery  :D

Thank you again. I was really just wanting to tell you guys this is a great community, but I do greatly appreciate the get well wishes. Being land locked is super frustrating. I missed a kiting trip to Brazil, and missing one to Mexico, but I have still a remote hope I could make it to a snow kiting competition to Norway in late March (red bull ragnarok competition) haha. That would make it I dunno 6 months. I guess I'll see, but the advantage of snow kiting is that you can lock your foot in a bit. I still have my doubts, but must have some goals.
:-)

I will use this time to do as Pono is saying...strengthen everything else as well. I need to lose some weight and this is a good opportunity for that. My one leg is down to a third of what it used to be haha.

Anybody up for a dietbet.com ?
We put in $50 or something like that and update each other as we lose weight?

Taut:

As someone who has ruptured both Achilles tendons I feel qualified to give some advice.  Don't do the sport that led to the injury ever again.  My mistake was thinking I could go play tennis again, 5 years later, and there would be no problem.  I was wrong.

Recovery time: Depends on your doctor and the quality of your physical therapy.  My first injury it took 5 months before i was back in the water.  The second injury I had a better orthopedic surgeon and excellent physical therapy and was back in action in 3 months.  You'll be fine and shouldn't have any future complications.

Good luck and a speedy rehab.

Oh hell..I feel for you. I would go nuts if my other tendon went now. I already have spurs and calcifications on the other one and it is sore as hell. The sport I did is notorious for taking out Achilles tendons. A recent veteran tournament took 14 tendons out in 2.5 days.

How did you pick a surgeon? It seems very random to me. I just stopped by a hospital and the first guy there.

I wouldn't pick a car mechanic that way. Best way is to ask other doctors in related fields. Who would they go to. That's how I got my knee and shoulder docs, and how my wife got her doc for kidney cancer.  We definitely didn't screw around with the B team for that one.

that is not a subtle hint... that is a statement of nature.

Among other goodies that appear with age, my knee is suspect.
so I pick my battles....... I am was a lifelong skier..... a good one who always charged double diamonds.
I walked away from skiing completely.... not gonna happen. My buddies badger me all the time to go on their trips. No thanks.

Surfing is all that really matters.....WAY too important to me... and much easier on my knee,
so retiring the ski's was easy.... now I paddle flat-water in snowstorms.... great replacement  :)

Becoming Joe Nemeth, is a life choice, but not a good one IMO

First injury the surgeon was dictated by my insurance company.  Second injury I lucked out, the ER had a great orthopedist on call that day.  As far as a referral ask friends or your personal physician.

If your injury is common to a specific sport  and you have a relationship with a team of that sport, why wouldn't you find out who they use?
