Micro surf camper
« on: March 31, 2017, 02:32:21 PM »
So I know one or two of you like following the builds I get up to and I have been a bit sparce for the past 5mths being away so I will through this one up until I get home in may and start on some new boards. We got the little Citroen berlingo at the start of our trip and it ended up costing a small fortune having to get a bunch of things replace but it has served us well since. However we have 2 weeks off over easter and we are doing  a road trip up the east coast and we needed somewhere to sleep and make it a little more comfy. The only problem is I have basically only had 2 days to do it in plus maybe a little bit of time Monday.
The main thing with the build is beds for the two of us. Some storage and still be able to get two boards down the center when driving. I have used form ply which has a smooth painted finnish and is relatively cheap for the main part of the build and with a little routeing its come up really nice. Anyway here is a few picks of the build so far.

Nicely done. I did a similar thing in my Airstream but made the beds so they could be moved together. Given my wife's propensity for sticking her ice cold feet on me, I'm not sure why I did that.

Very cool!  Placing the steering wheel on the passenger side is pure genius...wife can drive while you sleep.

The sliding box is a nice idea but not relay worth it on something this small, there will be a small section that will drop in to bridge the gap.

Have you considered straping the boards to the ceiling to get more sleeping room?

Nice work there. I've fallen in love with the camper-surf trip. The freedom and flexibility are addicting. And waking up with the break visible out the front window is tops.

The van I've been renting has no racks and I did find the inside board storage a hassle. Having to put the boards into the van wet after a surf or inclement night seemed less than ideal. Being able to lock them on top would work better for me.

My van back in the UK has internal storage for boards, this van most night they will be on the roof when at a campsite. I wasvplanning on maybe putting some bracket up on the ceiling but should be able to do without most the time

So the van did its job and we had a great two weeks camping in it up the east coast of nsw. We got back about a week ago and in preparation for heading back to the uk we gave it a good clean and put it up for sale and sure inuf later that day I managed to sell it for the full asking price so very happy.
