If you had a week in New England...
« on: October 12, 2016, 05:28:31 PM »
I checked out the charts in New England... looks like lots of cool places to paddle.

I am going for a week to New England (woohoo!).  If you had only a week where would you paddle?  (I am flexible in destination.)

More than a lifetimes worth of great paddling in New England. Whew... where to start...

I would be loose and use wind as my guide. This time of year, accommodations should be plentiful... unless you are in "leaf peeking" country.

I'll work on some suggestions... but whatever people suggest will be awesome. Basically no bad places  :)

U want a biased answer??

Cape Cod with endless marshes, tons of ponds, a couple of good size lakes and often, fantastic surf.  Throw in some decent fall days of kite sailing or windsurfing and you got it covered.  There are a decent amount of touristy things to do too.

When? If I remember correctly your down in South Florida and do mostly exploring and touring? How cold do you want the water to be. Big difference in the south side of the Cape and the North. Though that becomes less important the colder it gets outside. options are almost endless as creek mentioned.

Do you want other things to do while you're around. If destination is fluid Plymouth is a great starting point if you want to stay mostly in southern new england....great little town unto itself with great restaurants and plenty to do and see. Lots of paddling to offer locally and a great hoping off point for day trips elsewhere...Cape, Boston and Providence and all the hundreds of miles of coastline in between within an hours drive. if you want to stay more in northern new england (your chart) there are plenty of similar places up there but I'll let some of the locals chime in.

I've always thought Plymouth was a great place to paddle but it's even better for tourists for wide range of things to do, it's central location and easy access to other places.....from when I had a SUP blog.

Does the chart indicate the general area of your visit?

Do you want to surf, do flatwater or both?

New Hampshire and southern Maine have some great beaches and surf spots. Long Sands in York Maine would be a good central location for surfing with lots of spots within 30 minutes of there.

For flatwater and/or ocean paddling, Cape Porpoise and Biddeford Pool in Maine are excellent. Salt marshes are also fun to explore, especially the ones up around Scarborough.

There are lots of lakes inland but I don't know much about them. I only know the coast.

A week on Cape Cod would be nice but I'd avoid the rest of Massachusetts. The farther east you go, the better it gets.

If you want a world class destination, go to Acadia National Park.
