2017 Starboard SUP's what's new
« on: September 09, 2016, 01:46:57 PM »
We just received a container of 2017 Starboard models and I believe we may be one of the first shops anywhere to have these new models in stock.  The new boards have many new features and we are putting together a video featuring some of the many new designs and features of the extensive lineup.  We really like the new Starlite construction option, featuring scratchproof carbon/ innegra rails, carbon stringers, wood veneer deck reinforcements and many other nice features at a good price point.  The lower cost Starshot models now feature pre-installed RS pro rail tape and a great handle, and the carbon boards feature a cool new look, just to mention a few of the new features.

As the boards are now available to sell, I was given permission to share the 2017 product guide that can be downloaded at these links, so you can check out all the details here.  Video to come soon.

Love all of the improvements Starboard has made this year. Its just a shame they shed about 5L off of almost all of their pro models. Last year's 8x29 in this year's new construction would have been an easy sell for me.

Interesting changes to the 8'6" Hypernut.  They reduced the volume from 140 L to 132 L and added a 9' version with a volume of 145 L.

Nice catalog. The "Converse", 9' x 30" x4.1" @ 142 liters is that caught my earlier this summer. Sure would like to demo this model. The only hiccup, Starboard does not have any dealers in the entire state of Texas. Quite odd for a state with a long coastline bordering the Gulf of Mexico.
Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

What does "parabolic" refer to in the phrase "parabolic carbon innegra rails"? Is is it just referring to the rail shape or is it some special property of the cloth? How would it be better than "non-parabolic" carbon innegra rails?

It's marketing, parabolic sounds high tech but it's basically just an extra layer of carbon innegra on the rails.
I have to say though, it looks great and there is no paint to chip.

Deluxe construction moves to the fusion style that Red Paddle Co introduced last year. The Zen construction is a merging of the 2016 Deluxe and Zen. It now features rail stiffening bands and deck stringers. More to come...

It isn't just marketing, it is an engineering and design feature that is used in many industries. Parabolic refers to having a longitudinal section in the form of a paraboloid. And a paraboloid is a surface that its sections are parallel to a coordinating plane.

Using carbon and innegra in a paraboloid helps with flex, durability and strength. Some companies use wood, Firewire was known for making parabolic wood rails, which arguably made their boards stronger and store more energy through turns.

Ok, so if you put carbon/innegra (or wood, or whatever material) on the rails, you have parabolic rails, as the rails are parallel to a coordinating plane, right?

They might just simply mean the curve of the rails are mirror symmetrical, which would make them stronger and stiffer. I'm not familiar with that definition of a paraboloid. I visualize paraboloids as a parabolic cup. Probably I have more a mathematical view than an engineering view since I have no background in engineering.

Starboard makes great boards but they have to do something about that Star Touch grip, it is terrible for surfing barefoot with.

The Star Touch on the old model Touring 14x30 Carbon has just enough grip for mild DW riding barefoot.  Your feet can slip if not careful.  The grip of the deck pad is much more secure.

Er ah, so it's kind of what Bert Berger did with balsa wood at Firewire back in 2006 and continues to do at Sunova, but with carbon/innegra?   Nice, should be durable.
