404 Air Race
« on: August 13, 2016, 12:11:14 AM »
Hey!
I was wondering if one of you guys have been on the water with the
404 Air Race 12‘6 or
SIC Maui Air-Glide X 12‘6.

Both not very common over here in Germany. (and not well promoted…)
How do they perform in flatwater or choppy sea?

I know the Naish One Air and Starboard Astro Touring. Maybe a reference…
Really appreciate your help by sharing your experiences!

cheers
Joe

I recently got to paddle the 404 12'6 and it was nothing special. We were paddling flatwater and boat chop conditions and the board was fairly stable. It was noticeably flexible, but it may have been slightly under inflated. I used to have a RPC Race 12'6x30 that paddled nearly the same when deflated a bit. Now when correctly inflated, the RPC was noticeably more stable and faster since it didn't flex as much.
I've only seen the SIC, but the shape and dimensions are pretty much identical to the 404, so I'd presume it paddles the same. Both have identical planing hulls and most likely similar rocker lines. The only difference is the weight and psi. The 404 is 5lbs heavier, but goes up to 20psi. The SIC maxes out at 15psi. However the SIC utilizes a dyneema "stringer" to stiffen the board, so that may make up for the lower psi. What I also like about the SIC is they position the inflation valve at the tail and their bungie tie-down is spread wider so it makes stashing gear a bit easier. I liked the look of the SIC better and it seemed like they put more thought into the design. Even the SIC storage bag is better than 404's.

Over the time I have test different inflatable touring boards. For me nothing cant hold the candle to Starboard Deluxe construction, or the Red Paddle MSL + RSS technology. Any reason to grab a board from 404 or SIc?

Just trying to figure out who's next to the standard premium brands.
And at least the price is premium for 404  ;)

Got a lot of positive feetback for SIC in the meantime.

SIC claims that 15 PSI is enough for their boards, wondering if anyone have tried those and could compare with Starboard or Redpaddle.
