New Zealand Mud Snails - take 2
« on: July 19, 2016, 12:02:15 PM »
Hello,
I posted this last week over on the General Discussion thread but had no replies so re-posting here as this is primarily a flatwater issue.  Hoping folks will chime in  :)

The lake I paddle in has an infestation of New Zealand Mud Snails.  They are tiny and nasty.

To help prevent their further spread the board needs to be cleaned and decontaminated before going into other waters.  The recommended methods include:
Freezing (um, no)
Scrubbing with 140 degree water (not very practical)
Allowing to dry completely for 5 days (rather not wait that long between paddles)
and
Spraying down with Formula 409 cleaner and letting it sit for 5 minutes.  Any idea if that would damage the board?

How do you deal with New Zealand Mud Snails if they are a problem in the waters (many Western States and the Great Lakes in the US) you paddle?

Thanks!

I doubt that 409 would hurt your board.  Maybe try it on a small patch and see, but I would be surprised if there is damage.

If it was me, I'd call the manufacture of the board and ask them if 409 would harm the board. I'd also ask the manufacture what they use or what they would suggest as an alternative for 409.

Thanks.

There are a number of aquatic invasive species out there that can travel between water bodies on watercraft.  Some snails, mussels, and some algae come to mind.  I haven't seen it discussed on paddle board websites, forums, and blogs.  What do folks do to help prevent the spread of these invaders?
