This is all good stuff, different strokes for different folks, match the hatch, when in Rome, etc.  I have noticed a lot of waist leashes in our local races, and I will probably adapt to that.  And, I may even try a HD waist set up for head high or bigger winter surf.

But, the original post was specifically about nose-riding.  What works best for keeping your feet from getting entangled in the leash as you walk the board?  I still think the calf leash is the call in most nose riding conditions.  I mean style is important right? ;D

We sell a few calf and/or coiled leashes...not my preference...our leash preferences by a country mile, are the SurfMore XM with quick release...or, the Crow Hayley waist leash...

With the Crow Hayley you will forget that you even have a leash on...pretty much stays off of the deck for cross-stepping back and forth...to and  from the nose...
Additionally, I've paddled quite a few rivers and lakes this Summer with potential snags...either will release you...but, it's easier to grab the waist belt release...

If you haven't tried a waist leash, then does your opinion count? Not in my book.

Anyway, I recommend 10 ft not 9 ft for the waist leash. It's a longer reach to your waist.

I tired a 9 footer when I first got my waist leash. I could barely reach the nose of my longboard and when I fell foward while on the nose, the leash pulled me back into the board. I smashed my body into the deck. Think about what's happening there. With a knee leash, no issue diving off the nose when you pearl the nose. With it at your waist, you can't dive off the nose. It yanks you back.

After going to 10 feet, I've yet to have anymore issues nose riding.

Yep. I have fewer issues with the waist  leash nose riding period!

I have seen pics of Hawaiin Boize with a calf leash on the front foot with the leash pointing forward! Have NOT tried that combo myself.

+1 DW! If you haven't tried it yourself it is merely conjecture and speculation. Which is a wonderful thing.

Wow, sounds like a great way to go...

I like to nose ride on shorter boards...7'6" - 8'11"...and, find a 9' waist leash to be the perfect size that minimizes dragging in the water...
I never had a problem with straight ankle leashes, while nose riding either...but, the waist leash is an improvement...

Nice nose riding video. Really like the slo-mo in it. The slo-mo helps me pick out details which I would normally miss in regular video speed. Nice nose riding action photo too.

If you shuffle to the nose then a straight ankle leash isn't much of a problem.  If you plan to cross step the ankle leash becomes a hassle.

After all everyone laughed at the Wright Bros..

Read 'Unlocking the Sky' by Seth Shulman and you'll frown at the 'Wrong Brothers'. First person to actually fly a plane any real distance and land it was Glen Curtis.

For some reason calf leashes cause my calf to cramp. I've always used ankle leashes and have no problem with them. I've used a waist leash a few times for racing. Maybe it's because I'm so tall or that it was a coiled leash, but I could feel the weight of it bouncing continually. It was annoying. I tried a half coil and the bounce wasn't as bad.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.
