I rinse all metal parts, which is mostly fin screws in a SUP board but a windsurfing rig has a lot more. I am not worried about the glass, just things that can degrade or corrode from saltwater. I also rinse the Gortex vent that Jimmy Lewis has in his boards. Goretex cannot breath if clogged with salt.

I always rinse my boards after every outing.  Not sure if it's beneficial for the boards but main reason is to protect my car--don't want that much saltwater dripping on the paint.

Yeah I should do that, spent more than 2 carbon race paddles on having rust removed from the roof of my car....  salt water for boards every day for a few years

Always rinsed the board. Earlier with the glassed on fins only did it for banishing of the sand and salt. Now with the futures I keep the screw heads fresh as well.

I'm probably not going to worry about a little salt on my roof when I've been exposed to tons of salt on the road all winter long.

Having a place a mile or so from the ocean, you will still get salt in some of  the mists that settle out on everything.

Homes and stuff obviously rot and age faster the closer they are to the ocean.  My car's finish seems pretty durable, I don't take care of it at all, no observable rust.

With all the whining I get from my compadres about my car, it's actually held up pretty well for a maui rig. One reason is that it has a cathodic protection system installed.  Of course it's been three or four years since I replaced the sacrificial anode, and it's gone, but the whole rig is near end of life anyway--which means good for another five to ten years until the motor falls out on the road. Another reason is thatI generally rinse my boards well, and living in Haiku means they get rain-rinsed as well, but still the major rust is on the roof on the base of the racks. Wet stuff inside leaves it smelling like a dumpster every so often, but I just do a careful collection job, ensuring I get the dead compression socks that roll under the seat, and let it air out for a day. The wear and tear stuff is going, wires that get flexed are breaking. But it only has to last until the house3 sells, and then it's a donor.

I won't buy a new internal combustion engined car--feels too much like buying a buggy whip. Fun restoring old ones though.

When I was a kid surfing I never washed my board or my wetsuit or even sometimes myself, which is how the sand built up in my bed:)  Years ago Steve Boehne loaned me one of the first race boards he ever made. We paddled together and when we where loading the boards on our cars I asked him if he wanted me to wash the board off before returning it to his store. He said " what the heck for? I've never rinsed a board of in my life."
Like Pono, I used to rinse my board off quickly with some fresh water before putting it on the roof of my car so the dripping saltwater didn't cause the roof of my old car to rust more than it was. Funny thing is I don't bother doing it with my new car ::) Just keep waxing the car.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Buy a van, and wait until the boards drip dry before shoving them in,,,,,,,,, it's a life style.
It takes a quiver to do that.

I'm very selective...

1. The SIC F16 gets rinsed every time. Steering mechanism reasons. Otherwise it rusts and rots and suddenly you're in the middle of the ocean with a rudder that is as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike..
2. Race boards always get rinsed as the crud over here builds up and slows you down.
3. New boards always get rinsed. Lasts about 12-18 months
4. Inflatables get rinsed and left out to dry before rolling up and packing
5. Old boards don't get rinsed
6. I pay special attention to the leash, and leash cuff and any fabric over carry handles etc as they seem to rot / degrade way much faster if not rinsed in high humidity / temps (like Florida)

I'll take a hose to the boards on the top of my car if I have to.

When I lived in the UK and windsurfed, we never rinsed any board, sail, mast, boom etc. Only the mast extender / foot / mast protector, wetsuit and booties etc. But it was colder and things did not rot.

I'd have to get a long van in order to get my 18' unlimited in it.
