Gotta love “butt ads”! Shouldn’t this be filed under the “hot chicks” thread?

Personally… if I feel a need to pedal I have a lot of bikes ready to ride in my stables. Also I happen to live in bike paradise, the thing we miss here is regular waves.

After a solid season telemark skiing, and back out on the water again, I'm always surprised by the workout our legs get just doing classic SUP with a paddle. The simplicity and the full body workout are what makes SUP such a cool sport.

That said I do see why some might gravitate to this new kind of water workout and frankly, this might add some interesting visuals out on the water. So… certainly not complaining.

They will probably sell some, but they look incredibly weird awkward and slow compared to the grace and relative speed of paddle boarding. I could see that it would be difficult to go upwind due to limited thrust and balancing issues. If it gets more people on the water then I applaud. Hope we down see any in the line up. Hah!!

Wow, better get my "bolt on bike" idea going.  You just mentioned something like this yesterday afternoon in my shape shack thread.  How long before somebody makes a fat tire version that you can ride right up on the beach.....   LOL!

I think I will stick with the paddle.
Why did I ever get into water sports - should have choose something less costly and disruptive to the family.  Like drugs and hookers....

Got my wife the I 11s and actually had its maiden voyage yesterday. Got a Revolution and I 12 in the house already. She likes it alot. Still working on bringing two boards with us, instead of packing a kayak for her. Maybe the (i11)  is the stepping stone? Drop stitch center and only to 5 psi. It got WAY choppy and windy yesterday and she was warm and fuzzy. I will definitely give it a whirl sometime. We both saw the ad for the Eclipse and neither of us have an attraction to it. Harbors and lake houses I would guess. For anyone curious, the I 11 packs down smaller than the I 12 but still nowhere as small as an Isup.

Yikes......Bill and I actually did talk about something like this on Maui years ago, 2008 in fact. He had the mirage drive on the adventure isles that he bought. I'm pretty sure we had partaken in a few glasses of holy water and laughed at the visual....I'm still laughing now.

The thrust from those mirage drives is impressive and I think any kayak I bought would have to be able to be equipped with them but this is just too goofy looking except for the point yugi made about following behind the right person.

This makes me think somewhat of the guy from Falmouth that brought his invention to the Charles race. Basically a whales tail under the board that you pumped up and down like an old rail workers cart. It looked very much like those handlebars. I had actually suggested to him to bring it to the Charles after test driving it at a SUP demo he brought it to. The thing was FAST...far faster than you can paddle but more than a bit awkward. I was surprised that I was able to do it at all not having a paddle but once going it was so quick it had good stability. Despite his age, 75 or so, he was doing well in the race until we hit the lagoons and the weeds stopped him dead.

Possible product slogan?:
"Hobie - because loading a normal SUP onto your car's roof isn't awkward enough"
-- My doctor says I suffer from low kook --

Do flying fish hate us?  Hells yes

I've seen their pedal powered fishing kayaks and those seem to be well thought out.  I would have sworn this was an April 1 ad.  Looks fairly limited but it does raise the bar for those striving for the maximum kook factor.

My plan was to use long handles on the drive and engage the core. I wanted to include leg muscles directly but I thought the mechanics would be clumsy and heavy Not sure how efficient the pumping motion will be, but these could be quite a bit faster than any classic SUP. The Mirage drives are much more efficient than paddling, with the right coupling they'd probably deliver upwards of 200 watts, and with a super-optimized user maybe 350. I doubt Connor can deliver more than 150 now. I'd guess the "handbrakes" move the rudder. Probably the entire mechanism removes for transport, that's the usual Hobie approach to these drives.

Should be very interesting.
