Aha, smaller blade. I should have mentioned that. I'm a huge fan of smaller blades. Every time I use my friend's large blade paddle I get all sorts of weird sorenesses.

I'm not so sure about the under used muscle being the cause of your soreness, but who knows. Have you watched a bunch of YouTube vids on proper paddling technique? If not, highly recommended. The biggie is learning to paddle from your core as opposed to using your arms. Once you have proper (or close) paddling technique and a paddle that fits you, you should be fine no matter what board you're paddling.

Paddling technique yes I'm good on. Blade size I was suspicious of..... My blade is 17.4" x 8.5",  can't remember the specs on my wife's but it is definitely smaller. I suspect it might also be to long.....

Just went and measured, her paddle length is 4" shorter and the blade is 1" longer but 2" narrower.

Use her paddle and your 14" board for a couple of miles and see what the results are. Two inches narrower paddle and 4 inches shorter are both huuuge difference especially 2" less width on the paddle itself.

That's the plan as of now. The weather is going to be crappie for a a while but the 1st chance I get I'm going out. It's crazy how inches make such a huge difference......

Yep,I learned the paddle width thing the hard way. I started SUP at 58(now 65)yrs.old and I think person at SUP store saw a newbie to water sports and unloaded a 120sq. paddle on a 5'6" 180lb old man. When I finally got a 85sq paddle I thought I'd been teleported to Heaven and my shoulders were sooo thankful ;D

Yea I think mine is close to 120sq. I didn't have any direction to start from so I just did my best. Several months later I know soooo much more......  I wish I had gotten my 2nd board choice and 2nd paddle choice. I'd be sitting pretty now if I had. Oh well live and learn.

i was well advised when first getting into sup to concentrate on the paddle the most and the rest would follow.  Good advice and i have had a great time since.

Why not just get another Bote HD and the same size paddle as your wifes.

I'm leaning towards that but before I make another big change I want to figure out what's wrong and what I need to adjust. I can easily paddle 10-15 miles with my board loaded down with gear if I didn't have that pain in my back. Hopefully sometime in the next week the weather will  get better and I can do the same route but with my board and her paddle. It's crazy I'm not soar anywhere else after 10.5 miles except that 1 spot.

Here's a photo from 3 or 4 weeks ago on that trip.

Thanks,  we were in a area I've never been before so we went prepared. I didn't know if we would see another person all  day or be surrounded by people. I had all the essentials for a worst case scenario.

Just for fun I thought I'd list everything I had in that pic...  Gopro mounted on suction cup arm,  tervis tumbler, collapsable anchor, 35qt yeti with a bunch of cold drinks and food,  1 spinning rod/reel, 1 half kayak paddle for easier paddling in tight mangrove canals, handheld VHF & GPS, small tackle box, small marine 1st aid kit, plastic fishing pliers, waterproof phone case, 2 steak out poles, and the smaller square igloo cooler on the rear is filled with snacks,  change of clothes, towel,  and my camera gear.......lol ok I think that's it... Yea I know way to much stuff,  but like I said we were going far and in a area I wasn't familiar with.

No wonder you've got sore muscles ;D I'd still be in bed unable to move if I paddled all that and a big board 10 miles !!
