Paddle Surfing Video Huntington Beach 1.2.2016
« on: January 03, 2016, 10:11:32 AM »
It's nothing great, just testing out the new MyGo Mouth Mount with a gopro silver Hero 4.  I definitely learned a few things, like keeping the lens clean.  Learning to edit the footage has been interesting.  Surf was very small 1 to 2 but I think this set up shows promise.

Fine job all around, Newps! Intro, surfing, music choice, and editing all strong. That Sim sup looks a blast and you scored some nice rides! I prefer paddle and board mounts but to each his own! One thing I DON'T like is that GoPro bumper! "Be a Hero" indeed! I edit that bit out!  :P If you wanna see it animated head over to "Sessions" and check my vid, bud.

Thanks for the feedback guys.  I have no idea how I would edit out the "Be a Hero".  I am still very new to this editing so maybe I will figure it out.  I would like to have the second perspective on the paddle but I would not have much footage to use.  I use my paddle a lot in turns and making it to the inside section.  I am also a top to bottom surfer, unless it's big and I trying to make a section.  Seems like the paddle mount works really well for driving down the line and tube rides.  I am not a fan of the board mount perspective but I will say it did look good in your video.  I think my real problem with both of these other mounts is the amount of footage you have to edit through.  With the mouth mount I can click it on a few seconds before I start paddling for a wave and turn it off as soon as the ride is over.  Yep I admit it I am a little on the lazy side.  Hope to make another one soon in some actual surf.

Nice vid, and some great surfing, but I was just as impressed with the nice stoke from the longboarder here.....

Very cool....that's the way it should be everywhere.

Try this link to an edited ver of the bumper minus motto in my Dropbox! I did that edit a LONG time ago. Need a freshie w/Hero 4 in it.

Try a paddle mount, you'd be surprised at how usable the footage is even w/a bunch of turns. It's pretty easy to turn on/off too. Prob not as accessible as the mouth mount though. The board mount is a pain to access on sup though. Sometimes I'll go 3 mins w/it shooting b4 I get a wave. Over three I usually do an off/on for a fresh file.

btw- thanx for checkin my vid, Newps...unusual user name!

Keeping the surf vids coming!!  Thanks for the stoke.

I've found the mouth mount easy and nice views of the session. Although I've seen some nice paddle mount vids, my own experience is a failure without any usable stuff.

To get the good paddle shots you've got to hold it in positions suitable for the camera angle.  I use my paddle almost all the time while surfing, it's always touching the water.

Paddle Surfing Newport Beach 1.4.2016 with TheNewps

Shot a second video today.  It makes a big difference if I remember to either lick or use my fingers to clear the camera lens after every dunk.  It's just one more step I need to remember when I am out there.  Surf in HB was much bigger but it was a shit show.  I waited for 20 minutes for a lull in between sets.  It never happened, wave after wave, set after set.  So I headed down to Blackie's aka The Newport Pier.  It was ok at first but then just got worse.  The swell had no power, just a wind swell.  Water going every which way possible, crossed up chop.  I was hoping to get some decent footage but it was not meant to be.  We will see if tomorrow morning is better.

Jeeeezzz Newps…really enjoying your videos!  Thank you.

Your local surf knowledge must put you in the right surf spots.  North of Point Conception today was consistent 8 to 12 foot faces, glassy but really bumpy and warbled.

Bigger surf forecasted this week.  Looking foreword to more of your videos.

Thanks lopezwill, happy to hear to like'em.  So far the conditions have been meager to poor.  I look forward to producing something I will be proud of.  Right now I'm trying to get into a rhythm with the equipment.  Sounds like you guys are getting the swell first.  Glassy and bumpy go figure :).

Nicely done man. Love the vids. I need to get back on my filming. I have a buddy's cam so I'm going to play with 2 shots, paddle and nose of board.

Nothing improves my surfing more than those horrible nose shots. I try not to share them but they are great for getting your feet in the righ positions. Can't wait to see more.

Great videos Newps!

Certainly will be looking forward to more if these are your first attempts. I'm curious about your ride. Looks like your S5? Any thoughts to share about it? How big were the waves in your 1st video?

We're back to reality with winter now here in VT so you definitely got me stoked. Keep em coming!

The specs on my board are in my signature.  I really like the S5, it's a fun boards that cuts like a shortboard.  I can still float on it without having to paddle between sets.  It catches waves pretty easily.  This board has allowed me to progress my paddle surfing.  Waves were definitely on the small side, 1 to 2.  It's great to hear you guys are enjoying them.
