Kelly Slater and team created a "perfect" mand made wave
« on: December 18, 2015, 11:42:59 AM »
This is the best man made wave I've ever seen.  I saw this for the first time today; sorry if it's old news.

I Gotta agree with Kelly (like I could disagree with Da Man)
Wave pools have come a long way since my days (mid Eighties) with them

The only question I have is it re-producable and/or cost effective BUT...if they did it once it won'tr be that long till you see more of them

That wave could  get me back into proning (Dare I Say)

I felt a tiny bit choked up watching this, it reminded me of when I was 3 or 4 years old and saw Cape St. Francis in Endless Summer.

Machine perfect wave after wave might get boring though.   But dang that's a beautiful wave.

Where's this wave park?  I only hear 100 miles from the coast.....for whatever reason, I was thinking it was overseas somewhere(?)

It is beautiful looking....definitely need to clear up the water color!  looks "muddy river".

I am really curious of the design of the pool and the wave pump. Ocean waves are unique to the situation - almost no edge boundaries and essentially infinite depth. A pool, simply by being finite in size, cannot produce the same wave as a deep-water, long period ocean wave. For my fellow-geeks out there, pool waves are probably solitons (driven by a pump) rather than harmonic (driven by a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability). At any rate, this is why pool waves have always been mushy. But Slater and his team managed to either make a soliton break like a deep-water wave, or somehow created an actual deep water wave in a shallow pool. Whatever they did, I imagine it will be patented. Probably why they are mum on the details.

I don't believe that was a wave park. It looked experimental to me.  Not sure how it is "reloaded" or how they control backwash, or what the cycle time is. It will be very interesting if it is commercialized.

The way it works is it uses the same principle of a boat going parallel a beach and generating waves on the shoreline. The test tank they made was circular and shaped like a donut. I thought it was supposed to create a left on the inside and a right on the outside of the circle. Also, the wave shape can change by varying the bottom.

Backside is an art form, no complaining.
It takes a quiver to do that.

From the looks of it, the reservoir is a rectangle, and the mechanism is linear. It looks like they could have it break either way or even generate an A frame. I'm guessing out towards the SoCal dessert, because he lives in San Clemente most of the time.

Phoenix? Is that where the famous surfer Rick Kane is from?
