I'm right with the descriptions here by the lot of you.  Clay makes a great description of the guy you want out in the water with you.  It describes guys Like Dave Daum of Kings, Al Fimlaud of SUP sports and many of you that I've met out in the water.

A wave hog typically is someone that lacks empathy and displays a selfish disregard for those around him. If you can empathize with the proner freezing his ass of in the right spot (10 feet in from us suppers) waiting for the set to arrive, you will naturally give the guy a chance at something to make his day.

If you don't know, or pretend not to, then you probably are one.
Oh I know about myself; absolutely not one.

That was the royal you, meaning anyone that doesn't know, probably is. I wasn't singling you out.

I am certainly a wave hog. And I know it. I try, but when a nice wave sets up, and I'm  in position for it, I kind of have to go, even when I probably shouldn't. It's the reason I wind up surfing left at Kanaha--so it's not quite so obvious.

Of course Boyum does what he can to keep me honest.

joel tudor.  in a word the worst hog I ever surfed with.  I was in Cardiff surfing my weber performer. This was years ago. He took off on a wave. And I took the next wave behind him he rides it pretty far been kicks out turns around paddles out and as I'm coming down the line he turns his board and takes off directly in front of me. That is a classic waves hog no matter how good Tudor is he will  be an asshole forever.

I remember being so stoked in the late '80's or early '90's, the editor of Surfer Magazine came out to surf with us, I didn't recognize him. It was barreling high-tide Slot at The Lane with only about 4 of us. But you know 4 of the boys can lock it down. It was really booming on the cliff for some suicidal takeoffs behind the rock. In the article months later, he said I was the friendliest guy around, but a "One-man crowd." Hahaha! I still laugh over that. Gotta try and find that issue from some collector or eBay. When there's a danger element to the takeoff, those willing to risk the most and succeed deserve the rewards. Nowadays, I'd be the old codger hoping for leftovers... Oh well. Gotta up my game again.

I'm not good enough to be a wave hog yet.

Someday, I will be good enough, and I will become a wave hog.  Then, after a few tens of thousands of waves, I will become a gentleman.

Snaking is what burns my bacon.  I don't care if someone is catching more waves than me, just don't snake me to get those extra waves.

i don't think of wave hogs as being 'good'. often they're the worst surfers out there. but they ride a wave, come back, circle around on the outside, and take the next one. i think some SUPers think if they can always be the furthest outside, every wave is theirs. i'll either paddle away, or if in the 'proper' mood, block them.

Most likely a personality disorder. Guess what, they did not change when they entered the water.

Exactly. It was mentioned in a post earlier,if you have to bicycle in to the take off zone then you really aren't in the right place to catch the wave.It doesn't matter how far outside you are.

however Joel is the  exception most pros of famously excellent surfers I have surfed with are  very Cool. Case in point surfing a while back with my son he was riding a ruer August Board  and this old guy paddles over to him  and starts asking him about his board. I am watching nit saying a thing (one of those Dad things)   My son says he  loves the board  the says something like  Good I am glad you like it and paddles away catches a wave  and goes in . I paddle over to my son and ask him do you know who that was he says No. I say it was Robert August the guy who shaped your board.  The look on his face  was one I will remember  forever , Joy and wonder and maybe some surprise.

Tudor took off in front of a friend's little brother one day at Malibu. The kid (12) caught up to him, pitched the tail of his board in the air, and said, "not today, Joel" as he surfed by Joel's wipeout.

Favorite story ever.

PS I love Joel's surfing and he can party wave with me anytime.

Malibu is the worst spot I've ever seen for shoulder hopping.
