Sweet & Versatile Boards for touring
« on: December 09, 2015, 07:42:31 AM »
While not for everyone, I find the 17'6 x 23" to be very versatile.
Here's to thinking outside the box with your Unlimited boards - AND I HOPE TO SEE MANY MORE UNUSUAL PHOTOS.

Ever see a SUP transporting a bike before?

Yeah, in your first pic ;) Looks like fun and if I had more room and money, I would be interested in getting a bigger board for sure.

Awesome.

Can you send pics of what you rigged up in the Sprint cockpit to hold the bike please. I presume it isn't just "balancing" there.

Here are couple more photos… I recommend clicking on the image to see it full screen.
(it will actually take you to the photo album)

You'll notice the bike rack… and the fact that it's sort of just standing there on its own.
For my summer trip to the island, I will be taking the bike without the rack - weight saving of about 2.5 pounds.
Instead, the rear wheel will be PULLED by a strap towards the front standing area, all the while the front fork will be PULLED towards the rear of the board using the leash attachment. The only difference from the picture is that there will not be a rack, and that I will be using 3 straps (two for the fork with opposite pull - right and left side of the fork).

Sounds weird, but it's a simple 30 second rig that's faster than rigging a board on a roof rack.

Cool. Your bike stand seems to work pretty well. Who care's about an extra Kg when shlepping a bike on a SUP? Or more worried about what to do with the rack while biking?

You are "insuring" it with a leash, right?

Hard to tell on the photos, but I forgot to mention: you'll want to protect your fork (actually, you want to protect your board deck). Place a piece of foam under the fork.

To answer your question:
Yeah, the bike stand works well, but for added safety, I am still going to have to use a 3-point attachment.
Saving 2.5 pounds makes a big difference to me when paddling 40+ km (or is it just psychological.)

I can easily lock the board once on the island, but the rack is just kinda of a pain. In the end, the bike will have 3 straps, so it's not going any where. I'll even be able to catch small runners on the way back, without fear of loosing anything.

If you guys have better ideas, I'd love to hear them.
