Figured out how to fix that lousy Future SUP handle
« on: August 25, 2015, 01:50:53 PM »
You know the one I'm talking about.  The "Future" handle has no place to hook your fingers and it is literally a pain to carry a board that way.  I have that on my heavy beginner barge and it about breaks your fingers to carry that aircraft carrier very far because there is no ledge inside to hook your fingers on.

I cut a small piece of neoprene from an extra tie down strap for my bike carrier.  Cut it so it is about 1/2" wide and it's length about the width of the handle.  I cleaned the inside of the handle and neoprene strip with rubbing alcohol and then used Shoe Goo to glue the strip in.  Just a couple of drops at first to hold it in place, and when they were dry, I built up much more Goo to make it as strong as possible.  The homemade finger ledge is in there petty solid.

The picture may look like the neoprene ledge goes all the way to the bottom of the handle, but it is actually quite narrow.  As soon as your fingers go in, you can wrap them around the ledge and get a very nice grip.  Way easier than replacing the handle with a better one.  The job is not pretty, but it made that board so much easier to carry.

I've used a piece of scrap EVA foam from a deckpad & it does the job also. It's already got the adhesive backing too.

I thought about that but was concerned that the adhesive from the deckpad would not be strong enough.  Obviously, I was wrong about that.  Anything to fix those lousy handles is fine with me.

I don't think those handles were designed by someone who has carried many SUPs.

i rolled a 3" piece of epoxy putty and stuck it in there--quick sand with a sponge sander--huge improvement--those handles blow hardest when walking distance in wind, exhausted, after a long sesh.

Thanks, Ed.  My only concern was whether the Shoe Goo would hold, but it holds great.  It was an easy, quick fix for a very annoying design flaw.

Good Job Zoo!  I had a similar issue with a couple of Surftech boards... but they have that damn crossbar.  Hmmm..? I had some SS hooks from another failed idea and the handles: Lemonade!
