Cheap SUP Car Rack
« on: July 23, 2015, 07:46:02 AM »
Hello! Long story short I'm looking for the cheapest way to attach my SUP to my rack-less car. I have a little Toyota Corolla and a  beautiful 10'8" by almost 3' board. I've been looking at soft racks but it seems there isn't a lot out there made for SUP and/or cars without roof racks.

I am lucky enough to live on the beach so I won't be driving with it often but I want to have the option without spending $60+. Wondering if I can just buy a couple straps and cheap foam/noodles to protect the top of the car/board?  Any advice welcome! Thanks  :)

I'm doing two noodles wrapped in duct tape with two ratchet straps right now.  This is for a 14' Niash Glide on  Camry.  It works fine, however I just order a $65 rack off ebay for the future.  Especially since I will be traveling a bunch of highway miles with my board (going to lakes).

Pool noodles for sure for such infrequent use but be careful with the ratchet straps. You can damage a board if you go too tight. I've seen and heard of rails getting crushed. I'd also put the board fin first and run a line from the leash plug or a loop behind the fin and run it to your front bumper.

Oh....and I wouldn't buy a cheap rack, too much of a chance that it might become a very expensive rack when it fails. Cheap usually means noisy and it might be less secure. I have Rhino racks ($300) on my Elantra for the days I want to surf pre or post work. I put them on 3 years ago and they haven't moved a mm despite having been used a lot. Pretty quiet and very secure.

I can't get pool noodles here very easily but I substituted them with some of those foam pipe insulation tubes slide over a length of the appropriate sized pvc pipe and it works pretty darn good.

Thank you all for the responses! One more question, how long do I want the foam/noodles to be? As wide as my board or longer/shorter?

That is a cool setup!  Probably great if you're not driving too far.  If you are going farther I've been using Block Surf products for years and you can get their single racks on Amazon between $30-$40.  Depending the board length & car size you may want to run a line to the front bumper.  With ULI inflatables I've just used a towel between the car & deckpad and a single strap through the front door (if you don't have a roof antenna) - or deflate it and put it in the car.

One more thing - if you live in an area with a lot of rain running straps through the door frame can let water in.
