1st Surf Session w/ the Allwave
« on: June 09, 2015, 06:00:55 PM »
Greeting's All:  As previously post, I picked up a new Allwave 9'5" from JimK back in early April and FINALLY got to the in-laws (Newport, Rhode Island) this past weekend.  Although I've enjoyed several sessions with ii on the local home waters of Annapolis, MD, I couldn't wait to get it in some waves...not matter how small.

I got out for 3 hours each on Fri and Sat mornings, and then another hour Sunday bright and early.  Waves were minimal...knee high Fri/Sat, but Sun am picked up a bit and it was sooooo much fun - wind picked up after 10am-ish each day but it was nice between 6-9am.  I really like the board a lot and found it to be quite easy to ride and responsive. I look forward to my next visit in a couple weeks!  Can't wait.

Another hack lead guitar attempt to a backing track to accompany the vid.

Well for starters you are standing with the wrong foot forward.  I don't know it just looks goofy to me.

Loookin' good, WS! You're really good at surf guitar too! I thought you were David John at first w/the hat 'n shades! Just a suggest, limit you're approach to the wave to only a coupla paddle strokes or less for better action in ur vid edits.
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"

S-up'd:  Goofy....I know, right.  Funny thing is the other thing I do lefty is write and eat.  Kick, golf swing, bat, throw, etx., is all right.  WTH!

Thanks SurferCook...yeah, I like David John's vid's a lot so some influence there... Shades are prescription Silverfish glasses.  I don't really need em but its quite nice to see clear while on the water....especially the little peeler's.  The guitar lead (and tremelo picking slides) are 1 take each...lot's of clams!!!  I don't care though...any future vid's will likely have other guitar stuff unless banished by others here.  I love surf instrumental's as well as classic rock...especially P. Floyd stuff....

WhatsSup, looks like you had a good time at Second Beach. When you up this way again hit me up as we (a few zoners - Mr Big, Stoneaxe, Piece of 8, etc) are usually over at 1st Beach (depending on conditions, also look like you caught the water while it was clean and free from the wonderful red-tide that is already blooming).

PDLSFR:  Will do....definitely would like to catch up with you guys!  I'm shooting for 6/25-28 timeframe.  Yeah, I dread the red-tide (algae)......I remember last Sept cleaning salad every few mins....  Pain in the arse....

I've reviewed my youtube video () a couple of times today in an attempt to try to pick out things I may be doing wrong.....one question I have is where on the wave should my paddle blade be.  I see my blade often digging deep into a wave (especially at min 1:50).  I don't know if I should just be gliding the paddle on the surface , not at all, or only to catch my balance, or try to turn(??)

Then I read Nosara's post about paddle length and read the paddle length  for SUP surfing should be about the height of the rider.  Damn...my paddle is set at approx 8" over my head!!!!!  Good thing its adjustable.  I'm 6'1" (73") and its currently set at 81-82".

I continue to be amazed at how much I don't know!!!!  I guess I need to start experimenting an inch or two at a time (?) Also, not quite sure about paddle position in/or waves....

Look forward to thoughts!!!

Most excellent.... welcome to the wonderful world of Allwave HRS.... great choice.

Your paddle handling is exceptional for a rookie and you did very well at the paddle mount filming.

All in all..... a very respectable entry into Zoner entertainment and information :)

Creekk:  Thanks for the positive comments!  I love the Allwave (9.5).....it was your reviews/posts and others that convinced me and I'm thrilled with it!

Any thoughts/comments as far as blade interaction with the wave once riding?
