Carbon JL Stun Gun or Super Tech ?
« on: April 09, 2015, 09:20:24 AM »
I ride an 8'2'' JL Stun Gun. I've had it for two years. Ridden it in every type of wave condition. Really love the board. I am intrigued now that it is available in carbon. At the same time, his new Super Tech series looks killer as well and has me very interested.  Curious if anyone has ridden / compared either of the carbon SG's or ST's to the original construction SG's like I have.  I have tried a couple carbon Starboards at around 95-99 liters ( my 8'2'' SG is 99 liters ) and found the carbon felt skatier and more of a buoyant feel. Non-carbon SG of mine felt easier to sink rail / tail in turns and carried a bit more momentum down the line. Any thoughts ?

Have a carbon WW and SG. Strangely the WW is really light and the SG is about the same as normal construction but still light. For me it works as I only use the SG in big waves so weight not an issue.

The supertechs are really designed for small wave performance and SGs are for larger waves. Depends what you want it for. Demo if you can.

Love my JLs :)

Hilly, could you have had your WW out there too?

The WW is a curious beast. I am not a fan of wide tails or nose riding but the WW has a wide tail and it works and deck grip to the nose that I use. Great board in carbon as it is unbelievably light.

Would I have it out in the waves above, probably not I would use the Stugun.

Saying that I have had it out in similar sized waves. Steep and clean it works well, sloppy flatter waves where you need to link sections not so good. Speed, wide tail and fat sections do not work well together.
