Hey Linter,

Its been a while, sounded like you were having a blast on it,
any update/more thoughts on the Black & Blue?

How far up on the nose have you been able to get?

What about turning from the tail, can you carve a turn,
or is it just pivot and noseride down the line?

I see you are looking into the Striker, maybe a more all
around board.

Hey, Subber:
I've had good days on the B&B and terrible days, especially when an off-shore wind gets above 10 knts and keeps me from dropping in.  Have I gotten at least 5 over again?  Hate to say it, but no.  In fact, my skill set has been declining at a pace rapido.  But that has nothing to do w/ the board and everything to do with increasingly faulty and stupid legs and feet.
Only reason I'm looking at the Striker is, no matter what, I do need a better all-around board.  I've got an Allwave but I've never cottoned to it the way most folks have.  Probably because of all that noserocker, which the JL seems to have very little of.

I think generally more wind is not so good for SUP surfing...although, if it is right, sometimes
it will blow you out to the line up and doesn't hamper to much surfing in.

It will be interesting to hear your assessment of the Striker to the Allwave.
I'm thinking the Striker is more refined, but I've never even seen an Allwave, so what do I know.
I have read that JL boards, are very smooth....I guess they don't have the chattering
of other production boards.

I also like the flat nose rocker. I think it should make a board faster to paddle.
It looks to me like the Striker and the Black & Blue have very similar flat nose rocker;
I was surprised when you said the Black & Blue was a dog to paddle....I guess we never
decided why...but I think it could be the rounded rear rails that the water sucks onto....
...that makes it noseride better - or maybe the concave.  My Pearson Laird Surftech 10'6"
is not the fastest paddler...sometimes I wish it had a tad less noserocker although
lots of people had trouble with pearling it - the fin does make a difference...and, you know
it does have a big concave.

I'm not sure what the rear rails are like on the Striker...
...they do have a Striker here to rent....I've wanted to rent it but never got around too it..
..maybe I will.  In fact, I was thinking the Striker maybe a better choice than the B&B since it
can also be ridden on the nose but is a more all-arounder.

Good to finally catch up with you & check that board Linter - it looks pretty cool.  It was pretty weak today but looks like next week we might have something on the way.  I'll keep an eye on the SUZ meet up thread & hopefully surf with you on the weekend.

Offshore wind is a blessing and a curse. At four or five knots a little Kona here on the North Shore combs the faces, makes the waves stand up straighter, and makes for a smooth, fast ride. Of course the bigger the swell is, the sooner wind moves to the curse end of the spectrum since the wave generates it's own offshore wind to add to whatever is prevailing. That means starting the drop well forward on the board to minimize the frisbee effect, staying low, turning on the face of the wave instead of at the bottom, and getting speed up quickly since speed is your only friend in wind.

I think nose rocker works against you in those circumstances since moving forward unweights the tail more than it would on a flatter board.

Exactly!  On my Striker I can just about paddle onto the wave on the nose of the board...

Thanks Linter - those boards have come a long way and there's lots of new stuff to be announced in the next couple months.  Friday & Saturday's forecast looks good so I hope to see you up in my neck of the woods for some nose riding and side-slipping.

BSD: What are the rails like toward the tail of the Starby, turned down or are they still 50/50?  I had that board for a split second and have been trashing it ever since -- like you, maybe wrongly.  i still think the thick nose is a problem.

Linter, the rails on the Starboard NR turn down about a foot forward of the outside fins.  yeah, I also think it's the thick nose--which shot up and broke my arm too.  Another reason I don't get along with this board.  I have an abusive board domestic situation.  :o

Unleash it and get a Restraining Order..

Getting beat up by a nice lady you had the audacity to call a
board and a nose rider won't get you much sympathy...

But you just might get your arm broken...

Or maybe you could just Sup It Up...

Super fun day today at the usual spot. Here's Linter in position stalling before he heads to the tip. The JL Black & Blue is a really neat board and it holds a great position on the wave to noseride. Hard turning is tricky but with some fin adjustment/experimentation and old school drop knee style would probably do the trick. Sorry I missed the nose walk but I was shooting from my board standing beachboy-style and didn't want to fall in.

This board was only a 9'0" but Chuck Glynn had nose riding wired at today's Santa Cruz Paddlefest.

We need to get this thread back on track.  Did you know the original Blue Machine design from Tom Morey got it's nose riding performance from it's ability to levitate? That Morey is a genius.

Hey CBB!

Did you surf the JL Black & Blue; if so, howabout a review,
how did you do, did you get any toes over?

I tried it for 3 or 4 waves and might have had five over.  It's very different from what I've been riding and takes some effort to turn set up as I rode it. However once you set your line and are  in trim and head towards the nose it feels like you're on tracks. It's a super interesting board with a great heritage and I'd like to spend some more time on it.
