Paddle length and trying new things…

While considering the recent posts on paddle length, I was struck by the following observation: often I prefer the more familiar method or technology even if I have not experimented with the alternatives.  I have to push myself to learn a new paddling technique, update my software, or try a new wave break.  Certainly some new experimentation proves entirely futile.  On some occasions, however, I gain invaluable knowledge.  Case in point:  after reading the posts herein on paddle length, I cut mine down by three inches (now it is 11” above my head).  My initial impressions (first day out) were less then favorable in the areas of board speed and overall balance.  I did feel, however, that I gained maneuverability and enhanced my wave riding performance.
