2" is fine for your board, make sure you cover the widest part of the rail, your 3" mark, that is where 90% of the damage occurs.
Rail Saver is the best but we mostly use high quality helicopter tape which looks and works great at a lower price.
Here is our wet application instructional video:

PonoBill, does the RailSaver pro fray or peel at the edges where your ropes/straps cross the rails? I've been pretty happy with the helicopter tape I'm using except that it's getting ugly where my ropes cross it when I cinch down with them.

I've never found or done anything that damages RSP, and there are probably a dozen people that will chime in with assessments that I beat the living crap out of my boards. In fact probably the ONLY thing that looks good or new on my 17.5 Bullet V2 is the RSP.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Is there a US or Hawaii reseller of RSP, or is everyone buying factory direct?

I usually just order it online. Here in Hood River Big Winds carries it in two widths, but no color (clear). So I buy from them when I need the stuff here, and just order online for boards in Maui.

I"m looking out the window at my Bullet 17 and notice the complete lack of scrapes and marks on the rail, even though I used the skinny tape. I guess I got it right.

I've had excellent, fast service shipped from the factory to the US by ordering at http://www.railsaverpro.com/

^^^Great shop by the way. Always my first stop when I go to Oahu.

I just looked at my Bullet 17 in better light. Right below the tape I have a line of whacks that look like someone's been playing drums on my rail. I'm going to have to get the wide tape. That's OK, I can pull up the narrow RSP and put it on another board. Maybe I should video that just to show off how it works. It's the weirdest thing.
