Fiberglass vs carbon paddles for surfing only
« on: August 09, 2014, 07:44:36 AM »
Hi, I cracked my carbon Kialoa paddle in half during the Bertha swell and would like to replace it.
Talking sup surfing only is there a big difference between fiberglass and carbon?
I really don't have the funds for an expensive carbon paddle right now.

Thanks, Ken

Ken, if the paddle is less than one year old Kialoa might re-shaft it for you at no charge.  Even if its more than a year old they will do it for about $100.  Give them a call.

In the meantime, pick up a lower cost paddle as a back up.

I'll look into it, thanks!

If you're used to a Kialoa carbon you'll hate a heavy, flexy fiberglass paddle. Contact Dave and see what he'll do for you--super nice folks who stand behind their products. You can also fix a broken shaft, but you might not like the end result. I've done it myself and it wasn't bad. Lots of ways to do it, search the zone for repairing paddles.

Last but not least, you could get a Ke Nalu Honu for $165, and when you've got more bucks, replace the blade with whatever you want. The honu blade is super tough and you can get either an xTuf or xTuf(S) shaft and your choice of handles. Cheap way back to a quality padle, and any time someone wants to borrow your paddle, or you're going someplace rocky, you toss the Honu back in. Heck, you might even like it enough to never change it. Beats the heck out of a crap fiberglass or even a cheapo carbon paddle.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

Thanks for the info!  I'll definitely look to getting the paddle repaired.

Getting a carbon paddle repaired might not be the best option, if the shaft has some damage it could break again or require a lot of extra weight to fix properly and could look pretty ugly too
