Fin surface finish
« on: August 17, 2014, 06:24:50 PM »
I was just wondering if any of you guys played around with the surface finish of the fins. Is there a noticeable difference between the same fin (shape & size) with glossy finish, rough surface, or even a surface with dimples? I looked at the qb homepage at some of the new paddles with dimpled blades and videos that suggest a slightly rough surface on your blade would make the catch and release easier or smoother. I went and used some 600grid sandpaper on my blade and I'm not sure I can really tell a difference. A fin is in the water the whole time so even a tiny difference could have a huge impact over the course of a 6 to 10 mile race. Just wondering if I should go sand down my gladiator fin  :o

Tried it.. and IMO you won't notice any difference..

The only reason to sand you fins is to take the sharp edge off the trailing edge if they are sharp.. to avoid getting a fin cut.

btw.. I do seem to notice a speed increase with my new Hokua quad fins.. Probably a placebo effect..  :D
