I find a colorful hats work best. Most of them float, at least for a while, so if you can spot it easily, you've got a good chance of recovering it. When I'm at a REI sale I'll pick up a couple of rainproof hats for cheap.

One of my all time favorite movies, along with "Blues Brothers". I used to watch them both at least once a year. It's been a while.

Sunday Afternoons makes two that float:

And one that doesn't float but is intended for swimming:

Anything with an overabundance of straps tends to look a little dorky, but a lack of fashion is a small price to pay for skin protection and not being strangled by a pull cord every time there's a large gust of wind.

I found these today but don't know much about them, i.e. would they stay put if you're being smacked around by a wave:

I've used one of Patagonia's "Surf Brim" hats for a couple of years. Works great. http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/surf-brim?p=28827-0
It's all relative.

Here’s a photo that I posted on another hat discussion on this forum showing Gerry Lopez using Patagonia’s Surf Brim
