The gadget can be strapped to your wrist or ankle and pairs with the Moov app on a mobile device to track your movements and give you feedback in real time, according to the Moov FAQ page. Moov can be worn on the ankle during running or on the wrist during a boxing session.

The fitness tracker gives detailed instructions to the wearer, noting when the pace is unsteady or impact on joints is too high.

"It is akin to a Leap Motion because it uses a combination of those sensors to map an object in 3D space," co-founder Meng Li told CNET.

The device is also handy during a work day, sending reminders for you to get up and move if you've been hunched over a desk too long.

Touted as both well-designed and innovative, Moov comes from a small team headed by a former Apple engineer and two sensor researchers from Microsoft, according to CNET.

The device, which currently works with the iPhone 4s or higher, officially launched on Thursday through a crowdfunding campaign seeking $40,000.

The company hopes to kick off the device this summer and is selling Moov at a special price for the next month: $59 for one tracker and $99 for two. The gadget will later retail for around $120.

Comprising fewer than 10 people, the group behind Moov has big plans for the tracker, which should be compatible with Android by this fall.

"These sensors capture really, really rich data," fellow co-founder Nikola Hu told CNET. "There's a lot more we need to explore."
