Taste of Scotland
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:47:39 AM »
Not been on the SUP for a while......strong winds but all in the wrong direction! Anyways, here's my local stretch of coastline......about three or four times a year this bay gets cracking waves when there is a big north easterly coming in. Not today that is for sure.......bitterly cold strong wind but some kiters enjoying it.

Turn to the left and more coastline but not as interesting for SUP.

That looks like a fantastic place to explore and do a bit of surfing.

Clicking on the pic really zooms it in. Judging from the cars in the lot, it looks like there were quite a few people braving the cold that day.

It must be really nice in the summer months.

Beautiful Scottish day.  If you have the time to put in the kilometers,
your coast must have some special bays, coves, and wrap around corners
to tame the wind.  Trick is having time I guess.

The coastline down to the east is fantastic....lots of coves, spectacular views and sandy beaches for miles, not to mention a few good surf spots. Very very few people Sup here but that is changing slowly....lots of prone surfing, wind surfing and kite boarders. If I had a touring Sup then on a calm summer day it would be superb. I have SUP'd east to west further down the coast with guys from the local surf club who teach SUP on foamies when there is no surf. Was hard work on just a surf Sup!!! It isn't a place to get caught out though......isolated. If you have access to Google Earth type in  Gullane in Scotland and then check the coast all the way east.....superb.

Yup - surrounded by links - Muirfield just 2 mins from the front door. Used to golf when I was a kid but never took to it later on.

Thanks coldy.... great to see the place you call home. For me, it makes the conversations we have on the Zone so much more interesting, when I know more about everyone's back yard.

Missed it in your earlier reply... and I was thinking:
"Hey.... wait a minute... that's Muirfield!!!! .... and he didn't even mention it. :o
The things we take for granted when they are right under our nose ;D

(For non golfers.... Muirfield is hallowed ground to golfers, just as Pipeline is to surfers)

When I was 14, I went to St. Andrews, Scotland... the Holy Grail, where golf was invented.... I still have the golf tees and ball marker I bought there. Makes me smile just to think of it.

Thanks for the "Gullane" link to search.... will do.

STC .....the golf course (looking to the left in the previous set of pics) is  Gullane No1 from the top of the hill looking west.....there are three courses in total.

Below: not the best pic but one my brov took when he he was in the army flying over in a chopper. Muirfield is in top centre of the piccy.....the main Gullane bay just to the left - on a big north easterly you get great peeling waves from the right hand point of the bay.

Looking round the coast you have lots more sandy bays/coves etc for miles and miles.

The second pic is a bit grainy but shows you how good it can get in the main bay....unfortunately not that often!! That day it got bigger and better......had the whole point just to myself whilst the rest of the world was at work.

That last pic of the peelers is SWEET! Nice handle btw- "coldsup"! I can relate!
One could go into a mall in Kansas and ask a teenager "What is a surfer looking for?, and the answer will always be, "The perfect wave"
