I wonder how many people are getting into standup on lakes, rivers, inlets not to mention open ocean who are not got swimmers and have never taken a water safety class or training.   After talking to many newbies, I have found many aren't awhere one can sink quicker in fresh water vs salt water.  Many are un-educated about hypothermia.  Proper saftey gear and clothing designed for the conditions saves not only their lives, it deminishes the threat to others who have to drag their sorry ass's to safety.

I'm no fan of stupid regulations and new laws every yr.  BUT, we see people all the time who have no clue about the following:
Weather conditions
Tide changes and speed
Water temps
Swell predictions & conditions
Proper wetsuit for the conditions
Basic navigation regs.
Education goes along way, it's better than just passing laws & regs so they can collect $$$$$$  feed the parasites !

These are just some of what goes into water saftey.  I like the waist PFD that is inflated by a CO 2 cartridge when in flat water. They do not get in the way and someone  can inflat them if need be. They are not cheap    $70 to $100.  I agree with the theory of a leash to keep you attached to your board.
Whats your life worth ?  Surfing is a different animal, enter at your own risk !
Respect the ocean's power and know you limitations, never turn your back on the ocean and you will have many years of exciting fun !

Its grand sport and safety needs to be a part of it !
Paddle / Surf  ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
