Foundation training
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:29:24 AM »
Kelly does it, Laird does it.   Foundation training's first premise is about bending at hips, not spine, a vein in many paddling threads on this forum.  Anyway check it out.  I did my first session after three hours of SUS yesterday.  Almost felt like stopping paddling (won't happen) for a bit while I reprogram the body.  But am going to give this a go.  Really really dig it.

Looks like repackaged yoga exercises.  And you can become a "certified teacher" as well in 4 days for $2500.   ::)

Maybe it works, but looks like another one of these health fad businesses.

Several posters here have used it to treat bulged/ruptured disks.  A good friend of mine ruptured a disk snowboarding, after 6 months of PT 2-3 times a week and the work at home she was given by the PT's she had no relief.  After reading what other posters had to say about foundation training, I told her about it.  It worked and last year we were able to ride together.  So what ever it is, something repackaged, something that borrows every from something else, something unique, it has offered relief to some people for whom nothing else has.

Very interesting. I have been involved in resistance stretching/exersizing for several years. We use somewhat simlar stretches for back problems. We feel that mostback problems are caused by the muscels inthe lower body and this is where he seems to be targeting. I,m sure it works.

Hell, you don't have to spend any dough.  There's some pretty damn good videos on the site for free.  Lots of little details to focus on that make it diabolically difficult.  Foot positioning and weighting is one, just like we all adjust ours when we paddle.  But that key one he demonstrates in the TED vid about maintaining that space between your lower rib and hip bone when you bend forward.  Maybe it's familiar stuff for many but i thought it was a great tool to focus on while paddling.  Did it this morning and could tell a difference.  Maybe it's for old guys and gals like me.  I'm going to make PBill do it when he posts up here on Maui in two weeks.

I'm having a bunch of issues that I'm pretty sure are related to back/neck misalignment...more neck than back. I def need to focus some efforts on fixing it.

Irks me when non-evidence based practitioners call themselves doctors, gives a misleading sense of medical credibility. Slick presentation though and from a PT point of view some convincing exercises, I have lower back problems (but don't we all?!?) and might give some of the basic poses a try out.

Ichabod - no need to brag! (I'm not one to judge but my wife says he's a good looking guy!)

Hey Bill

How has this changed the way you paddle ? Is it a noticeable difference ?  I have been doing the three exercises and it is amazing how fast my back responds to this. That nagging lower back pain is gone in minutes !! I only just started doing these a few days ago so I will see after a few weeks what it's like to paddle .

Looks like he has basically just put together a program specifically for training a weak posterior chain. I'll definitely give it a shot as I have a wicked combo of short and tight hip flexors that I know would benefit from this. Thanks for the share!

I've been trying this for the past couple of days and it works for my back.

I've had lower back problems for years and this really targets the lower back specifically.

In one of the videos he says, do this everyday and no back problems.  I am thinking so far he might be right.  We will see.

If you have lower back problems, give this a try.

Thanks hm... nice way to wake up :)
I usually start hunched over at the computer, checking wind, cams and reports. Now I am sitting & hinging.

Chiropractors make me suspicious right off the bat, but a good idea is a good idea.
It's pretty hard to deny that modern living has altered simple body motion in a bad way.
Like the ad says "it doesn't have to be complicated"
If he is on to something, and he can teach it to spread the word.... I am all for him making $$$ on it.

I will try it, because I have nothing to lose but lower back pain.

One of the weakest areas in my SUS muscle requirements, and THE most important, is my upper leg muscles... especially my Hamstrings.... if this method strengthens the way they all work together, then I will be very happy.
