yes I agree it is a great skill.  I should have clarified with saying people switchfoot surfing simply to avoid backside surfing.  If you are switchfoot surfing for variety and progression then all is good.

My experience is somewhat different. I have been a natural goofyfoot since I started surfing, back in the mid 1960's. I never thought about it, the first time I stood up on a board my right leg automatically went forward, and there it stayed. Flash forward forty years, and when I started SUP surfing somehow I found myself switching feet when going right, again without a conscious effort to do so. It just happened. I have also been windsurfing for the past twenty five years, so perhaps that had a role in it, although any cause and effect would be hard to pin down.

I still find myself starting out goofy when I go into surf stance and start paddling for a wave. But when I actually catch the wave I switch feet, unless its a left, in which case I have to remind myself to not switch.

I don't do it to go frontside, but I do sometimes go goofy when paddling hard into a wave and I am only able to move my back foot up to shift my weight real quick while maintaining a hard stroke.

Then I step back to regular as soon as I drop in.  Kind of weird but it works.

I thought that I was alone...
I do the same...

What is funny is I can do switchfoot with ease........ in flat water only. In surf its bye bye.

But to the other point of "avoiding backside surfing"...... backside is my favorite.
