Felt like it needed a little something extra.

Hey Makaiolani, Send me your design ideas, a picture, or a general concept of what you want (or give me the freedom to use my own ideas), and I can do a killer pattern for ya.

Question for those of you who have switched to this type of pad. Did any of you cut out spaces from your existing pad while it was attached to your board or did you pull off the pad and replace with pieces. Any tricks to pulling off the existing pad and cleaning the deck if that was the method?

Maui wave warrior, my deckpad is supper slippery and i was looking for ways to make it a little better, Photosettle sugested cutting it out with a plastic knife and peeling it out...it did come out easily with no need for cleaning up but that might have something to do with the quality of the pad.

Give it a try.

Yup....Hydro Turf. It seems to be grippy enough for what the board was designed for. I chose the smooth aggresive brushed over grooved or diamond cut due to the amount of time on feet for distance paddling......a bit thicker and softer. The extra at the top came in the package of surf dots they offer. They are the grooved mat and I installed them to 1. give me a few extra feet of placement  2. reference for my feet (feel) along the rail

OK, that's an old thread, but that's where it belongs anyway...

Here goes a pic of my Starboard Extremist with a new deck pad.

I was inspired by Bane's and others mosaic kind of approach, and thou it didn't end up perfect in terms of simetry, i really liked the way it looks in the end. Plus, this one has so much more grip than the original white SB deck.

Aloha,

Recsuppa.

Hi, Reid.

It wasn't really messy, but it was a bit of a hard work (took me about 6 hours). The original SB deck was peeling and tearing in some places, specially in the tail area. Also, I've been using this board a lot for the past two years and I always thought its deck could have a bit more of grip to it...

Anyway, that's how I did it:

Part 1- Removing the old deck: I used a wax comb with lots of WD40 (two whole cans) to soften the glue underneath the deck. Started from one of the peeling parts, spraying a little WD40 underneath and using the wax comb to separate the deck from the board top, as if I was skinning an animal (a big one) :D Some dots of white rubber still kept glued to the board, so after removing the whole deck, I used more WD40 in these rubber pieces and worked harder with the comb to remove them. After that, there was some glue residue on the top of the board, but it was already softer and easier to remove, due to the WD40 action. I used the wax comb one last time for a final "skinning" on the deck area to remove the rest of the glue. This part of the job took most of the total time.

Part 2 - Cleaning the board top: WD40 is an oily remover and it can ruin the glue of a new deck if it stays on the board surface, so first, I cleaned the surface with lots of old newspapper, trying to dry it as much as I could. Second, washed the surface with water and soap, then dryed it with a cloth. Third, I used some window cleaner (Vidrex, Windex...) with another dry cloth until the surface looked really dry and shiny. This took about 30 to 40 minutes.

Part 3 - Applying the new deck: this was the easiest part of the job. Cut the deck pads the way I planned, put them on the top of the board to check each pad's position, made the adjustments, marked their positions with a marker pen and then sticked them. This took about one hour (can take definitely more if you come up with a more intricate deck mosaic...)

As I said, it's a bit of hard work, but if your deck is getting old and starts to deteriorate, I think it's worth. Plus, you can always use some creativity to give a different look to your board.

Aloha,

RecSuppa

This was/is one of my all-time favorite Zone threads.....and the source of inspiration.
We kind of embrace the Big Leboswski thing here on Cape Cod
Too many for the rack
Some in the shack
Some under decks
Some have straps
