opinions on the starboard whopper please
« on: March 21, 2013, 12:41:35 AM »
hello and aloha fron supercold germany,
still dreaming about waves and sun. is the whopper, 9x34 a foolproof board in small and medium waves and choppy waters? right now i ride a 10,6 x29 board which is a bit tricky to ride. will the shorter board be more fun, can i catch more? noseriding possible?
thanks, eddie

The Whopper is 10' x 34". I've paddled it a few times in different conditions. It always felt big for some reason, not as responsive as I would have thought. I doubt you need a board that big if you're looking for more performance but still with stability. My C4 is similar in size to your 10-6 (10-6 x 28.5). I love it when it's glassy but my 9 x 34 South County is my go to for our more typical bumpy conditions and I can surf it like a shortboard or nose ride (or close at least... ;D)

I don't know if you would catch more but you won't be struggling in bumpy conditions.

I love mine. I surfed it from tiny weak waves to chest high. The bigger waves I getter performance. I'm old and fat and really like the added stability over my 11' x 29" longboard type Sup.

I've never surf it with stock find though.  I threw on some 3.5" fcs am always playing with the center fin.

How big are you Captain? I'm 6-4, 260+ with crappy balance and the 9' x 34" is very stable in all kinds of conditions.

I had the big brother of the Whopper... the Avanti 11'2 x 36
It surfed amazingly well for a huge board... the Whopper is very similar. I have never surfed one, but I have lots of friends that really like the Whopper... which as StoneAxe said is 10' x 34.... not 9' x 34.

They handle bumpy conditions very well and you can probably find a good deal on a used one... lots out there.

You could also take JimK's advice and check out the 9'10 Allwave... I have one... very stable and surfs really well.
