Modified my King's Simmons last week with an off the shelf kick pad for a fish. Works great.
An oscillating multi tool with the blade attachment is the key for removing a pad. Takes about 20 minutes to remove an entire deck pad, then about a hour, and a half a bottle of Goo Gone, to strip the glue from the deck.

Standin,
Your board, pad, stomp look great.  Nice shot of the step rail too.  My problem is I like the area where my rear foot goes to have pad far on the side.  And the ramp to have a wider surface area for the wide tails.  As you can see from my photo of my old board (haha 3 months old if that), I spread the 3 sections apart and added scrap padding between the large gaps.  It worked but I still want the ramp to be wider.  man, i'm ultra picky!

When skateboarding, I always liked having my back foot toes hanging off of the back corner of the kick tail, so I could get a lot of leverage with the ball of my foot. I can see why you'd want to get that kick pad closer to the side rails for that same leverage.

I also liked seeing the step rail pic, since I just ordered a King's with s-rails.

Would it be ridiculous to buy two pads and cut them to fit?

Not ridiculous. I thought about it but having to buy 2 to just use an extra piece gets expensive. Whether you can afford it or not it still makes you made to have to spend $70 + for a stomp pad.

Surely these have to be some of the most overpriced retail items on the market currently. I mean $120 - $140 for a piece of pad with some colors?

Might this one be a bit wider than most?

http://www.kinetikracingco.com/grip/wide-track

13.7" wide at the wides, so maybe 12 or 11" at the kickpad? Stretch it another half inch or so with a bit of spacing?

Yeah Skibike these are a bit pricey but they are the icing on the cake. An old friend of mine used to say that it only takes 10% more effort to make things first class. In relation to what a new board costs these days, that axiom is literally true at 130$ for a top of the line deck like OAM.
That Kinetic is nice and wide but it has no arch bar, I gotta have an arch bar even worse that I gotta have more cowbell!

I'm with you standin. That kinetic is nice but my foot goes by feel and I love an arch.

Ugh!! Didn't notice the lack of arch bar.

This is exactly what I have done on my small-wave 6'8", very wide at the tail: splitted a pad outside the main one:

For my rear pads, I like:
- a kick tail, as close to the tail as possible, being able to put your foot as close to the tail as possible means day and night for top turns
- an arch, useful to feel where you are on the pad
- kick tail sides cut at a diagonal angle, less drag and turbulence in the water

Colas- BINGO!  I agree with you. Nicely done on the pad and getting the arch far toward the rails. Why compromise for an extra 35 bucks. After first session you'll forget about the extra cost.
