Harbor Entrance Fun

Newport Harbor today at about 11:30.  The tide was low and getting lower, swell was 1-3 coming right down the entrance with the 10 mph wind.  With the tide opposite the wind and swell, it made the swells kind of stand up.  I was having a good time working my way to the entrance.  It was certainly getting interesting as I got near the entrance. There was wash coming of the nearest jetty and the swell was 2-4. And then one of those fishing boast came charging in.  You know, the ones that treat the entrance like a freeway off ramp, throwing a good size wake. 
I've gotten comfortable with these wakes.  But, that combo was too much.  So, down I went.  Outside was really sloppy with quite a few white caps.  So, I went back in a little, then crossed to the other side, and headed out again.  I'd had enough by the time I got to that end.
Paddling in that kind of  stuff is a nice workout and a lot of fun.

I have a similar spot, where the wind blows against the swell, and it's best on a rising tide, which works with the swell. Has a sandbar in the middle of the boat entrance, surfable wavelets 1-3 ft, right or left. Right goes directly into a rocky seawall of sorts, beware. Left, into the boater's entrance.
So, when boats use the channel, waves rebound off the seawall, and the wind picks up you have a very bouncy ride with an offshore wind, which sometimes dismounts me, right onto the sandbar, waist high level.
Crappy thing, lots of fun too !
