It dawned on me today while in the lineup: staring into the grey sky; waiting for waves to come...

The Fin needs to be able to feel the water.  It's plausible to me that trailers and center fins can cause you to not weight the side fins enough to cause any flex or drive effect.

To me, it feels like I'm getting the looseness where I need it but it also holds turns off the bottom for my 170lbs + plus wet rubber.  When I'm in the  bottom turn I can feel what seems like the right amount resistance.

I am using the small 4.5" center fin also so it's technically twin+1

I know that everyone's financial situation is different.  I know that this is an expensive sport.  If you are trying to take your standup surfing to another level, and if you have the cash to make it happen, you simply must meet with someone who knows how water runs across the bottom of a board and shape a board with him.

Kirk McGinty gave me the push.  We were e-mailing back and forth about Simmons inspired twins, and regular twin, and sticking some twin boxes on a quad... when he hinted pretty heavily, "Dude, just do it.  Make a twin."  Well, I can't make a twin... I can't make much of anything... but my friend Roger Hinds sure can!  Roger and I texted, talked and e-mailed... and dove in.

The template for the MACH TWIN is very similar to the Mach Bobby Roger.  As Twins need a bit of a straighter rail line, we ran the outline straighter back of the mid point, and then used double bumps to get back to the tail size that I wanted.

When all was said and done, with the double bump swallow, the 80's tweak beak, and the pronounced V... it needed a little bit o' Echo Beach... hence the "fade to pink" label.

Holy cow, this thing is going to run.  What was that again, "Like a naked boy running through the countryside" ...

I wanted to grab coffee and talk design some more, but Ralph texted me that a certain spot was super fun, and Roger had to shape some more boards for a very special customer (not me).

Shaping by 7, done by 9, talk design 'til 9:30, in the water by 10.  Home by 1.  All in all, not a bad morning.

SL

P.S.  I recorded most of the session with my phone, and will edit it to make a quick movie about Roger making the twin... discussing each aspect of the process... using all of my incorrect names for the tools.

A few more pictures.

Dropped it off at the glasser on the way home from surfing...

Aloha is going to do the glassing...

Close to Roger for questions... close to my buddy Molly Logan in case I need it rescued.

Stoked is definitely too mild of a word for what I am feeling right now.

Roger talks the board over... we agree on the approach... he turns on his headphones and disappears for an hour... taking a few moments in between for clarifications, using the caliper... and feeling the board...

Oh, and I caught him listening to Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" during the process.  Which is pretty funny because I sang that song to my wife at our wedding... Yes, I tried to hit all of the notes.

SL; that thing is sexy, but your writing on the exegesis of its design is epic.

The next socal demo day is going to be INSANE!!!!  Crazy customs coming from all directions.

On a side note...

Snapped off one of my new keels today in strong shore break on the way back in. Only second session on the new pokers and SNAP.  Also got fin poked today BTW.  Right in the YOU KNOW WHAT!!!  Let me tell you that's not a good feeling.  Very humbling.  Blunt trauma and red marks but all the boys are still intact.
 :o

Getting some Rainbow bamboo twin keels. to replace my groovy ones...

Simon,

Thx for chiming in!  Tell us about it, please.

9th,

Thx for the kind words.  This has been staring me in the face for six months... The SimSUP thread made it happen... So thanks Boludo!

Jean,

I guess we should ask Stoney about the pornographic nature of the tail...
