The Cape
« on: January 24, 2013, 02:54:27 PM »
No, not that Cape. This is Cape Florida in Miami. I took the day off and decided to go for a paddle around Stiltsville. The Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Miami and Stiltsville has a lot of history. Enjoy the pics.

We've had a stretch of onshore N winds and they usually bring in those man-o-war like the pic you had.  It's not too difficult to spot them and on a SUB you don't really expose yourself too much but it's great incentive not to fall.

I recently heard about stiltsVille, thought the idea was pretty cool. Does anyone live there? Approximately  howmany houses are there?

Hurricanes have reduced the number of houses. I think I counted 7 or 8. They are unoccupied now. The Park service took over the houses a couple of years ago.

Thanks Chilly.... I passed StiltsVille by boat in the mid 80's... I think there were more then. pretty neat. The park service should set up an overnight SUP motel... that would be fun!

And Man O War's are nasty... good thing they have big sails to locate them.

Creek, There were definitely more houses in the 80’. Hurricane Andrew destroyed a lot of them.

Below is the route I took if anyone is interested.  Park entrance is $4.00 Toll is $1.50

Chill- is that the Boga Tsunami? 14 or 12'6? How do you like it? compared to Alpha 12'6?
I have the 14 on the way, but have not paddled it yet. Is it carbon? Weight?
Thanks,
Shawn

Thats a great area, be down that way this week.  caught many a bonefish around stiltsville.  Great scenery. Do you ever get rideable waves outside of bear cut?

Shawn,
Sorry for the late reply. That’s a Tsunami 12’6”. Night and day difference to the Alpha 12’6. It really does everything better than the Alpha.  Its 27.5 pounds on a digital bathroom scale. Bamboo carbon sandwich.  The only thing I can say bad about the board is that the stock fin is worthless. I replaced it with a Gladiator fin and it made a big difference.

OCD,
I don’t think there are any ride able waves in that area. Other than a boat wakes that comes along. You’re right; it’s a great area, full of wildlife, Manatees, Dolphins, Rays, Bonefish, and Barracudas.
