Picture was taken by yours truely at the finish of the Freezin for a Reason 5.6 mile race in Ventnor NJ

Rik finished 35th out of 127 on a Fanatic All Wave 9'10(Trust me there was plenty of high tech raceboards in the field incl. 14FT prone boards)

It was a fun weekend with supthecreek

SUpthecreek was faster than 14s?  I mean the guy looks like a locomotive but that's pretty damn good.  Plus I think from other posts I've read that he's older than me... like real old... like PBill.

No shit? 5.6 miles on a board shorter than 10' made for riding waves and finish in the top 25% or so in a field of almost 130? That's damn good.

Great pic! I live in Jersey (hence my name) but unfortunately I am out of town this weekend. Glad to see such a great turnout (in January!!!) for such a good cause.

Ha Ha... I think JimK was a bit generous.

I started 5 minutes after the racers because I was going to paddle in the fun paddle.
JimK was off taking pictures and since I drove 400 miles to get there... I wanted to paddle the race course, not the short course, so I blew off JimK and followed the racers... they had a big head start.

I did manage to catch the pack and pass a bunch of them on the upwind leg. I got a few more on the remainder of the course. I figure I finished about 55 or so. It was my first time paddling in a race. Whenever the fat old guy came chugging by on a surf SUP... they would pick up the pace. It was lots of fun. ;)

Whenever I found a zone by myself, I would break out the camera and take a few shots... ;D

All in all... it was a great event, that raised some serious $$$ for the cause. It was well run, well attended (the winner came from California) and the course was beautiful. Right around Ventnor City Island. Houses perched on pilings lined the 1/2 the route.... the remainder was edge of the marsh and conservation lands.

A wonderful after party topped it all off. The Jersey crew is stoked, friendly and gracious.

JimK was a fantastic host as always... if you ever get a chance to stop by and see him, you will be glad you did.

The Jersey shore is open for business… visit….enjoy the warmth & spend some cash.

Lime.... yup

I'm double impressed... first the large turn out for a race this time of year in the Northeast. And of course Rick, the man, the legend, placing so well in the race on a wave board. Well Rick, now that you have racing on your resume we will be looking for you to enter the 3bays race this September 21 on good old Cape Cod. I will need company in the old fart division.

Nice job Rick! For a bigger guy on a small board that's pretty darn impressive. And good strategy on that upwind leg. It takes alot more wind,  than most most people, to blow you to the back of the pack!

Sup... that house built on the dock was wild... and seems to me vulnerable.  What happened to that area during Sandy?  What a cool protected little avenue for a race. Thanks for the pics.

If I didn't know I never would thought those homes were in New Jersey.

Those houses you see along the route were damaged extensively during Sandy, depending on the location and the height of the house.  Some of the house had several feet of water in them. A large majority of the houses in Ventnor heights have to have their entire first floors rebuilt. New FEMA flood height standards may result in homeowners being required to raise their homes or face flood insurance rates close to $10k a year. The "reason" for the freezin was to help give some relief to those in need. If anyone is interested in more info they can search "Freezin for a Reason 2013" on Facebook. There are pics and results.
