Hip Replacement Surfing Question
« on: December 30, 2012, 02:47:15 PM »
Does anyone on the forum have or know someone who has a nonmetal hip replacement and surfs?  This is a sort of technical hip replacement question.  I've had a metal on metal hip replacement for going on 6 years and have surfed, windsurfed and kite surfed with no problems - until recently.

To not get technical, my doc says I'm having a reaction to the metal implant and it should come out and be replaced with a nonmetal device.  The metal on metal device (this is the same basic implant used in hip resurfacing but mine is a total hip, for those in the know about this stuff) is more resistant to dislocations thus allowing more physical activity.  The non metal device is smaller and more easily dislocates.

I'm questioning whether I'll be able to keep surfing (without my hip popping out, ouch ouch ouch).  My doc is vague on this, only committing to I should reconsider my activities, but also saying it would take a rather significant motion to dislocate it.  So I'm hoping to hear from someone with surfing experience with a nonmetal hip implant.  Thanks in advance for any information on this.

You should pm Tomkat on this forum. He won the Masters NSSA after hip replacement surgery. I think he's had both hips done now and he SUS's all the time. He may have had a nonmetal hip replacement.

Hey Tom, could you please briefly outline your experiences/conclusions re: metal/non-metal for those of us on the other side of the world ?
Happy New Year!
Thanks,
Jim
