Where would you move for a year?
« on: October 14, 2012, 05:08:58 PM »
I'm thinking about picking up and moving for a year to somewhere I can sup surf regularly. This is a ways out, but I want to start the planning fairly soon. Ultimately there will probably be lots of factors to take into account, but I would like to cast a wide net to start with, so let's start with two requirements:

1. Very consistent surf with enough scope for some progression. I'm a beginner but hope not to be by the end. Ideal would be a break right out the door with a couple more that work on different swells within a half hour or so.

2. SUP friendly, or at least tolerant. I don't want to spend the year being glared at.

Maui. No question.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

In with PonoBill! : ;D

And I'd take out the trash, wash the cars, mow the lawn and whatever else needs doing

+1 for Costa Rica.

So jealous that I can't be on here asking the same question. Keep us posted with your decision. As you get closer  to that point it might be worth it to take a quick jaunt to scout out the next year of your life. If you don't like great surf, a tropical climate, cheap living, delicious food, and extremely attractive women, avoid Costa Rica.

So here's why. Most places offer a few things to do and have times of the year when you can't do them. Most places have a specific exposure to a swell, and when that's working you can surf. Islands have exposure to all the swells that are available in the hemisphere. Maui in particular has both surfing and wind. Spectacular downwinding (both southside and Maliko, the opportunity for a reasonably mellow channel crossing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, as well as south, north, west and east swell surfing.

On the bad side, it's a bit expensive to live there, but if your lifestyle is simple you can do it reasonably.

Lived in a lot of surf destinations... lots I missed...
By far, my best all around surf trip was to Australia.
I lived in Noosa for 7 months. Absolutely perfect.
Funky little beach community, surrounded by all manner of water sports and activities

Tropical
Very consistent waves
Three great right hand points and a small beach break right downtown.
Bigger beach breaks 2 miles away.
Over sand surf explorations, with miles of empty beaches.... just across the river
Tons of river paddling
Just a hop to the Great Barrier Reef, the bush country and the Gold Coast Surf Mecca.
Lots of rentals that are reasonable on the yearly rate.
Very friendly people
Great nightlife
English...
All manner of SUP equipment is available right in town.

If you want to live someplace for a year... it better have variety  ;D
I would live there 6 months every year... if I could.

Enjoy your search!
Google "Noosa Map"... explore the area

Maui if you can afford it.

Baja if you can handle it.

Puerto Rico is good for a few months in winter/spring.

I get to Maui wednesday, WOOO!

My question exactly. Seems like everyone who visits New Zealand wants to live there, and everyone who lives there wants to get the heck out of there. Is there something they're not telling us?
