Wrong technique or Too fat for the board?
« on: September 17, 2012, 04:27:36 PM »
Okay I'm 68 5' 8" and 200 lbs. This weekend I placed 2nd in 50+ at Paddle for Humanity, Austin TX.
To me 2nd is the 1st place loser. In looking at the start of the race and the end my board, 12'6", looks VERY low in the water, in relationship to everyone elses. I have a tail wake and if I move forward I sink the bow. I know I'm going to get hammered and told to lighten up on the Texas BBQ. TIA

I'm in the blue and gold shorts (right side)

What are the stats on your board (ie brand, dimensions & volume)?

If you are 200lbs, there is no way that board would work for 250lbs, it seems to barely floating you.  I would say the specs on the board are wrong, or it is overweight, like waterlogged.

But my real reason to reply is to ask, in the first pick, what is happening with the guys behind and between you and the woman?  crew SUP?

HAHAHA That was Supzilla. Monster sized inflatable. I'm sure Surfer44 has a bunch more pics or they are on SUPATX's or the Waterman's Facebook. It was a really neat thing to see, looked like they were having a bunch of fun. There were a ton of really nice, good people at that race.

At 68 and competing in SUP races,,, You’re Winning!!!!

I agree with Celeste. Do you know the weight of the board? Not what the specs say, but actual weight now.

I just checked the weight of the board 31 lbs. New board so it never has taken on water.

Tail 12"X2"  Seems it's always underwater. I had my wife check my positioning while we paddled across Canyon Lake, TX. today. When I could get the tail level, I would "bury" the bow with each stroke. I have a QB 100 38 and love it.

As Jake said "SUPZILLA"
That does look like a lot of fun, but I am worried about the guy following

So your board is 5-6 lbs over weight, but that is like 20%, that seems like a lot for production tolerances.  For what ever reason, that board does not seem to be floating you well

Nice submarine! Wow, you've got that thing buried, can barely see it in the one photo. I would try something thicker and/or wider.

I sure hope somebody gave #48x some advice. She has her hands a foot apart and the paddle backwards!
Semper Fi!

It's simple, either you get the wave or the wave gets you.

I have the same problem with racing 12'6" boards, but I'm 40 pounds heavier. If you get them trimmed out so the tail isn't dragging, the nose has an inch of freeboard. At 200# you should be able to get a 12'6" that will float you better, but they'll never be optimal. That wide tail is a step in the right direction though.

There's a reason we mooses like bigger boards. I have to stand at the forward edge of the footwell to get a Bark 14 Dominator to trim.

That board doesn't seem to be working for you, for whatever reason.  You could do as some suggested and cut back on the BBQ (check out the primal thread for some great, healthy eating!!), or do as Pono suggested and jump to the14/unlimited board.   I pretty much only paddle surf, but once you have gotten one of those 14's moving through the water, the speed gets addicting.
