out of control beginner in the lineup...
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:50:56 AM »
...here's what can happen: http://mauisurfreport.blogspot.com/2008/07/shark-attack.html

Sorry, I wanted to add this to that old thread in which somebody was wondering why an SUP beginner is more dangerous than a lay down beginner, but I couldn't find it...

Be safe and teach safety. Aloha.

Whew -- creepy vid.   :o

SUP surfing has revived my old prone-surfing addiction, so I've been doing a little longboarding lately.  First time I paddled out on my longboard, it felt like a toothpick compared to my 11' 9" Angulo.  World of difference.

I'm thankful I have a surfing background, because it's given me a real appreciation for the rules of order out there and what can go wrong if kooks on giant boards think they can act like kids in a wading pool.

"Be safe and teach safety."  Yep, it's up to each one of us to pass it on -- firmly.

Wow....If there's an Alian Harmfully/Randomly using Stand-up to Kill then I guess they should be called a S.H.A.R.K. :o

WARNING.........S.H.A.R.K sighting at Kanaha........ :)

All kidding aside........I pulled this from an area on this site which was written by Blaine Chambers. Visit this link and learn more.

http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php?topic=106.0

The key is to have an awareness of your individual impact on the situation your in.   Have basic common sense.     Be honest with yourself...  What are your true abilities?   Is this your local spot where you are more accepted?    Do you know the area well?  What are your options?   When caught inside what are you going to do?   Where is your escape route?   Are there other SUP surfers that aren't aware?   Talk to them.    Let them know if they are being dangerous or stupid.    Send them to this site to read things that could help them.    I hope this can help and shed some light on what will always be a touchy subject.

Aloha.........Sam

No doubt about advising new paddlers in the water, but why in the world would you allow yourself to get close to someone way out of control regardless what they are riding....Just curious?

I agree SP... most beginners are pretty apparent in the line-up and why go near them? I've seen that happen so many times and sometimes it just seems like asking for trouble. Sometimes it just doesn't matter "who has the right of way". If ya get wacked, ya get wacked. I'm suffering right now with a really nasty rail whack... but of course, I did it to myself... kook.   ;D

You're no kook Tracy, how many times have you simply been paddling out and a board comes flying at you never expected. Decision time, Nowhere to go but down!

Good point. I took the risk of getting so close, because the wave down the line was lining up real nice, but I had to keep that line to make a section.
Plus that lady just arrived in the lineup and I didn't asses her poor skill yet.
It wasn't honestly a difficult wave to paddle over, but still... my mistake.
