Wood strip SUPs

Has anyone built a wood strip SUP and where can you find plans for a board like this?

I don't recall seeing a strip plank SUP kit or plans.  Most of them use a skin of 3mm ply over a skeleton frame. I can not imagine strip planking being lighter then that.  You could laminate up your own deck if you wanted to really do something striking with wood

I built one, and many others have as well.

Here is a detailed thread on how I did it:

But those boards are not strip plank.  I could be wrong, but when a kayaker  says "strips or wood" I assume she/he means strip plank construction.

Mine is all strip planked.  The planks on the deck and bottom are about 3" wide.  The rails are bead and cove strips about 3/8" wide.  Why would you use really narrow strips for wide, relatively flat areas like the deck and bottom?  The only purpose of the bead and cove strips is to contour the wood around complex curves.

Oh, totally cool, I did not look at the build thread before posting, sorry.  The wide light and dark strips looked like wide boards.  What does it weigh?  I imagine 50-60#

Very cool! Seeing the pictures of the guts of this type of board and the work to curve the wood strips makes me appreciate the craftsmanship involve to build one.

Thanks for the compliments.  It weighed 36 pounds before I installed the deck pad, so it's a bit on the hefty side, but it's not that big a deal once you are paddling it.  It mows through surface chop on the face of the wave and has pretty good glide once you get it going.  In a lot of ways I overbuilt this board, and I'm certain I could have made it a lot lighter.  For one thing, 11'-6" is way to big (my go to surfing SUP is an 8'-0" SIMSUP these days), and much of the internal structure is built heavier and stronger than necessary.  I guess boards have shrunk a bit since I started this project in the fall of '07 ;D  Doing without the varnish job would save a few pounds right off the bat.  Bottom line, it's a viable construction method for SUPs and a lot can be done to keep the weight on par with many of the typical production sandwich boards out there.
