gerry lopez tri fin setup
« on: March 30, 2012, 07:49:20 AM »
Finally caught a few small lake waves at the end of last year's season.
Thinking of getting  a Gerry Lopez tri fin setup on my 2011 Laird Pearson Arrow 10'6
I weight 150lbs and try to surf  knee high sloppy lake waves .

Anyone have any experience or comments with with this set up?.
What will I notice over the stock setup ? ie expect it will turn nicer , allow me to come into shallower water but how much does it effect stability ?
Any other factors I should consider

Thanks in advance for any input

Perfect fin set for that board.  Its what I've got on my Pearson Laird and I love it.

I've got the quad setup. Definitely more responsive than the plastic I replaced. However, more fin area means more drag, so I have to paddle harder to catch the same waves.

I wouldn't buy it if you're thinking you can come in to shallower water though, it might gain you half an inch, but you really don't want to be risking your fins like that regardless.

I think the Gerry Lopez fins will be much too big, especially for your weight and slow waves. I have the tri fin set, and it is huge (14cm deep - the size you see on twin fins usually). For my 220lbs, they work only if the waves are powerful enough to allow you to push hard on the fins.

Going thruster is a good option, but I would advise 10-12cm deep ones, it will make your board livelier than the GL.

I would advise going smaller, and with cheap fins that break easily, to spare your board & finboxes if you run aground.

I agree w/Colas the Gerry Lopez fins are too much fin for a 150 lb person in sloppy waves.

I've got them on my 8'10" Wide Point running them mostly as a quad setup (occasionally as a tri-fin) and even on that short of a board for me @ 220 lbs when the waves are smaller they have nice drive but are  stiff in turns with all that surface area.
